I WAS AT THE GROCERY store recently and saw one of my former teachers. She seemed fairly old when I had her, but she was exactly the age then as I am now, which no longer seems that old. In her many years of teaching, she had close to 1,500 students, but she still remembered my name, even though it had been 40 years since I sat in her classroom. Without that dark moment in history when alcohol was forbidden, we would not get to sip house-distilled cocktails at Repeal, the latest business to set up in Fletcher Place’s funky, white-stone Virginia Bank building. The threemonth-old watering hole pays homage to the era with cocktails made from the gin and vodka produced at its next-door distillery, 12.05 (named after the date Prohibition was repealed, December 5, 1933). THE SAME DRAMATIC cliffs, plunging ravines, and tranquil forests that make McCormick’s Creek State Park (State Road 46 just east of Spencer, 812-829-2235, in.gov/dnr/parklake/2978.htm) one of Indiana’s most popular outdoor destinations helped inspire our state-park system a hundred years ago. In 1888, Indianapolis physician Frederick Denkewalter selected a pristine landscape 60 miles southwest of the city, in Owen County, as the setting for a relaxation “sanitarium.” When Dr. Denkewalter died, prominent conservationist Richard Lieber lobbied the state to purchase the property, and, in 1916, it became Indiana’s inaugural state park. Lieber, later the first director of what is now the Department of Natural Resources, eventually died there. How many times have you discussed urinary incontinence while having coffee with friends at Starbucks? Most women pretend it doesn’t exist. But the reality is urinary incontinence will affect approximately 50 percent of American women during their lifetimes. And it’s not just a problem for gray-haired grandmas. “Overall, when we look at women age 30 to 60, about 30 percent of those women will have some type of urinary leakage,” says Douglass S. BACK IN 1980, when we weren’t watching Three’s Company, 1.3 million of us were reading Lisa Birnbach’s The Official Preppy Handbook, published 35 years ago this month. It was the definitive compendium of all things upper-class, from what pastel print to wear to which private East Coast schools to attend to where you should “summer.” Country-club memberships were paramount, as were pink and green. He speaks briefly and from the heart, invoking his brother’s death and appealing for “love and compassion toward one another.” Riots ravage other cities, but Indy stays calm. That day affected a generation of local residents and is commemorated with the Landmark for Peace Memorial in Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Park on the near-north side, the site of Kennedy’s speech.
