International architecture and design firm ThomsonAdsett has designed Hummingbird House, a new state-of-the-art children’s hospice, which is the only one of its kind in Queensland and the third in Australia. Hummingbird House provides short break stays, family well-being services, creative therapies and care at the end of life for children with life-limiting conditions and their families. The design seeks to create a warm embrace for both children and their families. Bright colours combine with timber and clean, white walls for a homey yet playful and sensory environment to make both parents and children feel at ease. The project for St Monica’s Senior Centre commenced with the modernisation of a 1917 Heritage building. The contextually driven design reconceptualised an underutilised courtyard into a central modern learning environment that unifies six learning areas and a presentation space catering for more than 150 Year 5 and 6 students. The brief was to create a sophisticated and mature space for senior students transitioning to high school, while respecting and working within the Heritage framework. This was achieved through implementing a restricted material palette, custom joinery and ensuring there were diverse learning opportunities. Each MAISON&OBJET (M&O) there is a standout inclusion within the fair that showcases the work of the best and the brightest emerging talent, or Rising Talents. Generally they are French designers; however, this year something different happened and, breaking with tradition, the designers showcased were the next stars of the British design scene. One of the key attractions of this fair is its unabashed championing of design economics. Rather than let the finances take a back seat to creativity, this fair acknowledges the potential benefits of a design/commerce marriage. Moreover, the festival’s campaigning has not only seen Atlanta rise as a creative hub, it has also sparked industrial shifts with billions currently spent on design in the region. The Avalon Beach apartment involves a complete renovation of a tired, original 1970s two-bedroom apartment located in the relaxed, picturesque Northern Beaches of Sydney. The brief was simple: provide a more functional apartment to better suit a professional couple and their beloved bulldog. The design concept required the removal of the structural wall separating the kitchen from the living/dining space and to provide a new open living/dining/ kitchen area. An internal laundry was included, which the original structure lacked, and the bathroom was redesigned to make better use of the space. The design also incorporated connectivity between the open living space and the rear deck so that the occupants could enjoy indoor/outdoor living and take advantage of the Sydney climate. practice—Myers Ellyett project—Extruded cottage location—Brisbane, Australia Ben and Jen’s house once suffered the shortcomings of a typically compromised Brisbane worker’s cottage. Poorly considered additions carried out by previous owners offered more space than the traditional four rooms, but had resulted in a living environment that provided little thermal comfort and failed to address the need for flexible, indoor/outdoor gathering space. For architectural practice Myers Ellyett tackling such an alteration and addition was a two-fold challenge. It involved removing offending additions to express the vernacular building in an historically sensitive way while creating new additions to support a contemporary inner-suburban lifestyle.
