If you’re hung up on whether you should put your knives in the dishwasher, it is not always a good idea. I always wash my knives by hand with hot soapy water and dry them down with a towel. Some of the steels used here, like 1095 carbon, are not rust resistant. And although the blades receive a treatment from TOPS, the heat and vibration of the dishwasher will eventually break this down and make them vulnerable to corrosion. Amy Valerious is the craftswoman behind Warlander Enterprises. She is a knifemaker and a leatherworker who teams up with Joey Berry to supply sheaths for his knives. We’re very particular about knife sheaths and especially leather ones. Amy’s work is simply amazing, and the proof is in the little details. The leather used is from American tanneries, including Hermann Oak and Wickett & Craig, that provide premium leather. Amy burnishes the edges of the entire sheath so even the opening of the sheath and the belt loop are finished smooth like the side where the top and bottom meet the welt. As I alluded to in my intro, I generally like to work with a smaller knife in the woods. They’re easy and light to carry, and they generally are sized right for detail work for me. I can generally cut down saplings, process kindling and tinder and do most of what I need to do with a knife in the 4- to 5-inch blade range. With that said, it can take more time and effort to do that. That’s fine on a leisurely camping trip, and in good weather. When you’re cold and miserable, though, and you want to get out of the weather you don’t always have time for finesse. Sometimes a big blade just works better. The typical red handle over time has become something of a sign for the knives from Östnor, Mora. From the beginning, curly birch was the obvious material for the more expensive knives, but when there was a shortage, ordinary birch was stained with a red color before being varnished. As production increased, the stains were abandoned and the handles were painted with a dark red color instead, which eventually appeared in many different shades through the years.
