On Good Friday, 1963, Dr Martin Luther King Jr was arrested in Birmingham, in the US state of Alabama, after violating an anti-protest injunction. King spent eight days in his cell, kept in solitary confinement. As the campaign raged on upon the city streets and more peaceful activists filled the jail, he penned an open letter, known today as the ‘Letter from Birmingham Jail’. It was a tactical response to a published statement in a local newspaper by clergymen, who had condemned him as an outside agitator. Within a month, the local protest became international news. Typically depicted as rugged, lonesome heroes- out there saving the land and their communities from those pesky Indians – and, of course, typically white. Artist Yowshien Kuo uses their work to strip away one of America’s longstanding myths and then some. Colourful canvases are filled with Asian cowboys against the backdrop of fantastical landscapes and situations. Take for instance, recent works such as The Mourner is Perfectly Content to Kill and Ornamental Oriental, in which characters are entwined in erotically-charged positions in the manner of the Japanese art form of shibari.
