A giant tree in California that is famous for a tunnel carved into its trunk where cars could pass through has been destroyed. Known as the ‘drive-through tree’, the sequoia tree became a tourist attraction standing over 30 metres tall with a diameter of almost seven metres wide. Located at the Calaveras Big Trees State Park in northwest California, the height of the giant tree species along with its shallow root system caused the 2000-year-old tree to toppled over following a huge storm. Sumner Crawford of Charleston, South Carolina, recalled visiting the tree in the 1990’s and said, “It was so different and so odd... I feel like it’s part of my personal history. A talking Russian robot has been created to offer protection for international football fans at the 2018 World Cup. A group of scientists in Moscow unveiled AlanTim, a robot who can hold a conversation, resolve disputes in a fair way and even call police should real trouble arise. Designed by the Moscow Technological Institute (MTI), AlanTim stands at around one metre tall and apparently loves to watch football and analyse team tactics. The MTI explained they understood there was some uneasiness amongst people planning to visit Russia for the important football match and said, “To meet their concerns, the robot has promised to accompany fans in Moscow and to guard them against any troubles possible... AlanTim can recognize human emotions.”…

An American farm has become the latest trend by offering yoga classes that feature five tiny Nigerian Dwarf goats prancing around the studio. Jenness Farm is owned by Peter Corriveau who launched the first class in April this year. Corriveau said the concept, “was really kind of a fluke... it’s just exploded. The phone is ringing continuously for people wanting to sign up for classes.” The two hectare farm is located in Nottingham, New Hampshire and is home to 30 goats of different species. Corriveau initially had yoga teachers hosting classes in a side room off their retail store, but, plans to transform the top floor of his miking bar into a dedicated studio. A Queensland man with a lifelong love for birds has created a retirement home for feathered friends whose owners have passed on or moved into aged care facilities. Ken Banks, lives in Carwarral near Rockhampton, and is the President of the Rockhampton Finch and Parrot Social Club where he educates bird owners on how to care for their pets. However, Banks prides himself on taking care of birds whose families are unable to care for them including a 91-year-old, one-eyed cockatoo named Popeye and a flock of 400 canaries. Large native parrots are believed to live up to 70-years-old, whereas Rosella parrots can live up to 12-years-old, meaning there is the chance such birds would outlive their owners. Piles of broken and unused bicycles have been popping up across China following companies pumping out millions of new bikes in a battle for market share. Reports claim the two biggest companies, Ofo and Mobike, have 20 million registered bike sharing users combined. The boom of bicycle use originally revived cycling in China, however, there are now concerns about big investors producing too many bicycles. With the shared bikes not needing to be returned to a specific dock, riders have taken to dumping them in various locations around the country. Workers at Ofo are now tied up fixing tens of thousands of broken bikes. One Ofo worker revealed that he repairs around 20 bikes every day. A father and son duo from the Northern Territory have recently returned home after enduring sub-zero temperatures, drifting ice and potential polar bear attacks whilst competing in the North Pole Marathon. Tim and Ronan Buckley both completed the 42 kilometre distance with Mr Buckley explaining, “I knew conditions were going to be pretty tough, but I could not believe how tough it actually was.” Competitors raced across drifting ice meaning that runners could drift more than one kilometre across the ocean. Tim Buckley, aged 66, finished the course in eight hours, 12 minutes and 54 seconds and his 25-year-old son, Ronan, completed the marathon in 6 hours, 40 minutes and seven seconds. A Queensland man has placed his private collection of Summer Olympic Games torches on display at Bond University. Since the 1936 Olympics in Berlin, Victor Hoog Antink, has collected every torch since and said, “I have always loved the story of the Olympics.” With 19 torches in his possession, Mr Hoog Antink explained he was inspired to start the collection whilst running with the torch before the 2000 Sydney Olympics. According to the Olympics enthusiast, the most difficult torch to source, was from the 1952 Helsinki Games with Mr Hoog Antink explaining, “there are very, very few of Helsinki that exist because they were solid silver.
