An 11-year-old Shetland sheepdog named Robbie has received a pair of new bionic legs, along with the nickname “Robo-Dog”. Following a series of medical problems including paw injuries, skin tumours and orthopaedic issues, Robbie’s owner, Sharman Steel, contacted veterinarian, Dr. Pete van Dongen, who suggested the dog be fitted with orthopaedic braces on his back legs. Steel revealed that Robbie suffered from “Cushing’s disease which can cause muscles to get floppy. He had operations on his hind legs which should have been routine operations, but because of the Cushing’s he didn’t heal well, the bones didn’t knit.” According to van Dongen, Robbie is a pioneer and confirmed, “He is no doubt one of very few dogs in the UK, if not the only one, walking with two artificial feet.” Robbie…

Japanese students are attending a school that teaches how to be a successful mascot. The Choko Group in Tokyo offers tricks of the trade and instructions on wearing and moving in oversized, fluffy character mascot outfits. Choko Oohira, the founder of the school, educates class members on how to convincingly move in costumes resembling giant pandas, cats and sheep. Oohira is a 20-year veteran in the industry and aims to help mascot wannabes embrace and perfect the unique craft, saying, “I want to show the world how to fully become the character and explain that’s how to make children happy.” Students at the specialty school learn everything from dance routines, walking styles, how to interact with people and how to be as realistic as possible. A 15-tonne-ball of congealed fat has been discovered in a south-west London sewer and deemed Britain’s biggest ever “fatberg”. The blob, consisting mostly of fat and baby wipes, is said to have formed under a major road in Kingston and was found after local residents complained about their toilets not flushing. Waste contracts supervisor for Thames Water, Gordon Halliwood, admitted, “We’ve never seen a single, congealed lump of lard this big clogging our sewers before. If we hadn’t discovered it in time, raw sewage could have started spurting out of manholes across the whole of Kingston.” Repairs to the drain are estimated to take at least six weeks. Images from inside the sewer revealed that the rotting mound of fat had reduced the drain to five per-cent of its regular…

A teddy bear has recently broken Austrian daredevil, Felix Baumgartner’s world sky diving record. Babbage the bear was loaded by his high altitude balloonist owner, David Akerman into a weather balloon filled with hydrogen at a site in Berkshire England. The teddy bear’s control centre was in the form of a credit-card sized computer which transported the stuffed toy 39,000 metres into the air and 31 metres higher than Baumgartner’s stunt in 2012. The launch capsule was connected to an over-the-shoulder camera which resembled Baumgarter’s technology and allowed Akerman to view Babbages dive from the balloon. There was also a second camera installed into the teddy bear’s eye socket to show people Babbage’s experience of his fall back to earth.…

A six-month-old girl has impressed the world after gliding over 200 metres on a set of junior-size water skis across a man-made lake in Winter Haven, Florida. Zyla St. Onge, can’t even walk yet, but, stood on tiny water skis holding a handle bar as a boat pulled her along at a speed of 11 kilometres per hour. Father, Keith St. Onge revealed that his daughter could have kept going if the boat had not reached the end of the lake saying, “We had to stop... Otherwise, she would have gone a lot longer.” In the belief that the young girl had set a new youth record, St. Onge contacted the Guinness Book of World Records, however, officials informed him that they do not track records for individuals under the…

A 66-year-old strongman has successfully pulled a nine-and-a-half tonne truck over 15 metres by his hair. Manjit Singh confirmed the challenge was an improvement on his 2009 attempt where he pulled an eight-and-a-half tonne truck with his hair. Singh from Leicester in the United Kingdom, attempted the stunt four times previously but claimed he failed due to his hair being too shiny, saying, “I washed it this morning... It kept slipping three or four times, but we did it.” Incredibly, Singh’s hair-raising effort did not break the world record set in January by He Yi Qun from China who pulled a 9.7 tonne truck along with nine passengers, the driver and a camera-man over 15 metres. United Kingdom airline EasyJet have proposed the development of smart sneakers that guide the wearer around an unfamiliar city . Called “Sneakairs”, the shoes feature built-in vibration sensors which connect to an app via Bluetooth to access the GPS function on a smartphone. The Sneakairs then trigger vibrations on either shoe depending on the direction with user needs to turn to reach their destination. An EasyJet press release reported, “The app has been prepared to run in the background too so users can keep their phones in their pocket without the need to follow on screen directions.” A prototype of the product was recently tested in Barcelona by users who successfully reached landmarks, including Gaudi’s Casa La Pedrera and Casa Batllo without needing a map. A group of Swiss researchers have hosted a study which suggests your sleep is more likely to be disrupted when there is a full moon. According to author and sleep expert, Neil Stanley, this may be related to the human body evolving with the cycle of the moon who explained, “We evolved on the planet at a time when we didn’t have clocks or calendars and the moon was a time of celebration... we actually had a party every full moon and that over a million years lead to innate behaviour that we now as a residual folk memory have in our bodies.” The study involved 33 volunteers who were monitored in a controlled laboratory and found to sleep 19 minutes less during a full moon, as well as, taking…
