Graphene, an ultrathin form of graphite and a superconductor believed to be 200 times stronger than steel and lighter than paper, has been used to create a jacket. Company, Vollebak, recently launched the world’s first jacket made from graphene with a price tag of $695. The reversible piece of clothing is made from shiny, grey graphene on one side and nylon on the other. With a futuristic look, the graphene connects with the jacket’s nylon layer in the production process and lending the fabric its conductive properties. A self-appointed investigator fed up with dog owners leaving their pets’ poop out the front of his Adelaide home has taken action to catch offenders in the act. Steve Tamblyn installed a security camera on his property and captured evidence of a Golden Retriever relieving itself on his lawn with the owner simply walking away. Taking a screen shot of the incident; Tamblyn printed and laminated the image, staked it into the ground next to the pile of poop and posted the picture to Facebook. Tamblyn hopes the public shaming will encourage local residents to clean up after their pet’s mess and said, “I’m sick of dodging parcels left on the footpath by lazy dog owners so I thought I’ll take some action here and help clean up the footpaths.”…

A cat sanctuary in Greece is offering to pay someone to move to the island of Syros and look after 55 cats. According to the cat rescuing resort’s Facebook posting, the opportunity comes with an undisclosed salary, a small semi-detached house including utilities and a private garden with views of the Aegean Sea. Responsibilities of the successful employee include feeding the cats, giving them medical treatment and handling other general duties required to run a cat sanctuary. The job description also calls for the ideal candidate to have veterinarian experience, a driver’s license and the ability to handle anti-social cats from time to time. A marketing company in Minneapolis has introduced ‘fur-ternity leave’ to their list of employee benefits. Conservationists in Maine have rediscovered a plant that has not been spotted in the state for over 100 years. Documented last in 1887, the rare unicorn root is also known as the white colic-root or colicroot. During this year’s Maine Natural Areas Program, the plants were found growing on private property in a damp field near the town of Bowdoin. In the past 145 years, only three specimens of unicorn root have been collected previously and documented in Maine. The latest discovery baffled local conservationists, such as, Don Cameron, who advised that the property owner seems willing to protecting the plant and suspected the seeds may have been buried for years only to be recently shifted in the soil due to bulldozers. A 41-year-old man has been charged by police with allegedly stealing four tonnes of avocados from two south east Queensland farms valued at around $20,000. The suspected thief from Blackbutt was captured on CCTV footage driving a car into and out of the targeted avocado orchards during two winter picking seasons between 2017 and 2018. Detective Sergeant, Mark Ferling, reported that the farms had suffered significant loss from the disappearance of the avocados and said, “Our farmers need as much support as possible at this time and theft like this is just intolerable.” Police charged the alleged thief with 18 criminal offences including six counts of stealing, six counts of receiving stolen property and six counts of fraud.…

A German company has broken a Guinness World Record by cramming 956 people onto a single raft at the same time. Staff from DHL used wooden planks, poles, ropes and rubber rings to create a series of ten rafts that were combined to form one single raft. Gathering at lake Otto-Maigler -See in Cologne, the employees successfully stood on the raft together for five minutes without their feet getting wet to be deemed the new Guinness World Record holders. The previous record for most number of people on a raft was 512 and set in 2014 by another German company. This year, DHL confirmed they wanted to incorporate record breaking into its employee engagement program which was successful along with being an epic team-building exercise.…

The newest nursing recruit at Townsville Hospital is Pepper, a humanoid social robot. In the first of its kind in Australia, Pepper is being trialled in providing hospital information to patients. The joint project has been developed by the ARC Centre of Excellence in Robotic Vision at QUT, James Cook University, and the Queensland Government. Judy Morton, executive director of nursing and midwifery at the hospital, explained that sometimes, “patients feel that staff are busy and they haven’t got time to ask simple questions, and this is another way for them to get some information.” Pepper is able to track faces and respond to voices giving the robot a sense of humanness. The annual Brick Expo was held in Canberra recently much to the delight of hundreds of Lego lovers. The charity event united countless weird and wonderful Lego creations in the one location with exhibitors spending months to build their displays. The Krog family cleverly crafted a replica of Legoland to take out the Exhibitor’s Choice award. Jacob Krog said, “It’s essentially a recreation of the theme park in Billund in Denmark, which is having its 50th birthday this year.” Another 30 exhibitors collaborated to build an intricate train network with locomotives ranging from realistic freight trains to the magical Harry Potter trains featured in the film franchise.
