It is a real pleasure to introduce this October issue. In the interiors world, this time of the year is a bit like Christmas (actually, it’s better!). It’s the season for a burst of inspiration, from new fabric and wallpaper collections to chic high-street buys to a wealth of top-end gorgeousness that filters over to our shores post-launch at Milan’s Salone del Mobile fair in April. London becomes alive with creative events, including design pop-ups, cool talks and immersive installations. We’ve wrapped features on all of this into the following pages. I hope you devour them with gusto. When editing this issue I noticed, perhaps more than ever before, a close parallel between the A/W catwalk and current interiors trends. We know that the world of design is a homogeneous one. Years of first jobs being about apprenticeships or internships with friends or connections, and of craftsmanship skills requiring prohibitively expensive degree courses, has led to an industry that is predominantly white and middle class. We also know that talent comes in many forms, and that anyone can have an idea–it’s just that the routes to market aren’t available to all. Design has often been less of a meritocracy than it ought to be. For most of us, this isn’t news, but it’s worth highlighting all the same. THE COLOUR rust red It’s no secret that colour affects mood. During Milan Design Week, a pioneering exhibition by Google saw its visitors fitted with wristbands to measure physiological responses to space in the name of neuroaesthetics–a scientific field that determines the effect of design and environment on well-being. And lo and behold, much like the ‘womb-like’, earth-toned section of Google’s show, rust red–here to soothe, cosset and cocoon–is this season’s big colour. Mix with ochre, terracotta and dried plaster hues for an autumnal palette that delivers. Kara Mann knows a thing or two about karma. On the day her house purchase fell through she took a stroll around her Chicago neighbourhood. ‘I was so miffed,’ she says, ‘and as I walked, I looked up at this building and there was a For Sale sign in the window.’ Kara’s been living there ever since. Designed in the Twenties by architect Andrew Rebori, who Kara describes as ‘under the radar’, the apartment is one of just 18 within the three-storey block. ‘It’s unique,’ she says. ‘There’s nothing else like it in the city’, which is impressive considering Chicago’s architectural heritage. Her apartment was designed for the developer as a sort of show flat, which is why it has fine finishes including a marble chequerboard floor and a rather…

this is a home that is immersed in its landscape. At one end of its long rectangular structure, a glazed box reaches out towards the river, suspended just above the ferns and lush ground foliage. Meanwhile, the rear of the building is literally rooted in the soil. A wall of hefty granite stones that was already part of the riverside landscape was adapted to make the back wall of the bedrooms. ‘A century ago, those rocks were transported by horse and cart and then lifted into place by hand. Now we rest our heads against them,’ says Buster, who designed this house for himself, his wife Olivia and their four children. two chairs, a sofa and a bed: a capsule collection of pieces we’ve been proudly working on for months, bringing together our love of design with Love Your Home’s eye for detail, craftsmanship and use of the perfect materials. I start by taking hundreds of highly magnified images of butterfly and moth wings. With the ceiling soaring to 3.5 metres, the question of whether this light-filled en suite could take strong accent colour was never in doubt. Choosing the right shade took a little longer. After establishing it needed to be from the warm side of the colour spectrum to help make the large room feel cosier, Ripples bathroom designer Sinead Hegarty collated a mood board for the other surfaces. ‘The owners wanted a wood-effect tile, as dark as possible, on the floor and also had Carrara marble in mind,’ she recalls. ‘We discussed a brushed black finish to bring a modern twist to the brassware. A hard-working kitchen needs plenty of worksurface space, especially if you entertain a lot. And enough storage room, otherwise you are down on your hands and knees trying to find a particular size of tart tin. Everything needs a place and has to be accessible. Drawers instead of shelves are great as you can pull them out and look for stuff rather than losing everything at the back of your cupboards. When designing an open-plan kitchen/living room, it’s wise to get an architect to give you advice on proportions. It’s easy to see why Italian design remains so seductive. While Silicon Valley sets its sights on drones, driverless cars and the rise of artificial intelligence, the very pillars of Italy’s furniture trade–those of quality materials, expert craftsmanship and generations-deep family businesses–provide a sense of tradition and a human touch often lost in the modern world. a dark and enveloping shade of blue lies at the heart of Rebekah Caudwell and Nick Dupart’s New York home. It wraps around the walls of the supersized living room and is then a line taken for a walk around the rest of the townhouse, acting as a thread that subtly links the spaces. Interior designer Rebekah decided on this signature colour–Hague Blue–early on. ‘I knew that it would work with the large proportions of the main living area,’ she says. And when Rebekah says ‘large’, she’s not joking. With 12-feet high ceilings, this central space extends 43 feet from front to rear. 1 kit REDUCE WASTE WITH THE NEW SMART FRIDGES With the average British family throwing away around £700 of food per year, it’s not surprising that smart fridges which let us check what’s inside from the supermarket are already available. The latest models offer even more: you can now also track the expiry date of refrigerated products to cut down on wastage further. 1 Engage a kitchen designer early so that structural work and services are planned well in advance. ‘If you need power to an island for example, your designer will ensure this is installed before the flooring,’ says Daniela Condo, kitchen designer at Life Kitchens.
