Although the official definition is ‘safety rail’, we prefer to think of the stair banister as something to glide your hand along when you sashay into a party, or somewhere tempting for the kids to slide down. The word ‘baluster’ derives from the Italian balaustra, meaning pomegranate flower, as the individual balusters (or ‘banisters’) that make up a balustrade were traditionally shaped like the partially opened flowers. Intricate detailing gave homeowners a way to show off wealth and importance. Much more than just a legal requirement in UK homes, the stair banister is a way to be creative. Ebba Thott founded interior design company Sigmar in 2005 with Nina Hertig. Together, they combine their love of clean lines, luxurious muted hues and Scandi simplicity with a keen eye for the elegance and fine craftsmanship of mid-century and modernist furniture and accessories.
