Roll away the circles and kick out the squares – there’s only one shape you need to know about this season and it’s the hexagon. Perfectly poised and symmetrical, there’s a reason this six-sided design is so prevalent in nature (not to mention construction) – it’s both flexible and strong – so it’s time we started paying heed to its good looks too. It also allows you to introduce casual dining into a galley-style kitchen. I do love a wish list and my top must-do for this year is to invest in a new sofa. Amazingly, my ten-year-old white linen one still looks (relatively) clean, but feathers puff out of it every time I take a seat, so this is the year it has to go. Background Hailing from across the Channel, the term parquet (‘little park’) was coined by the French when wood planks, and later more decorative designs, were placed under a seat of honour to elevate it above the rest of the room. Up until the 16th century, the grandest of dwellings favoured marble or stone floors, which, although beautiful, were expensive to lay and required strong foundations. While simple wood boards were commonplace, it was the introduction of the tongue-and-groove joint that enabled the ‘little parks’ to spread across entire rooms – and the trend really caught on in Europe once Louis XIV had them laid throughout the Château de Versailles. Pea and Parmesan soufflé Serves 4 • 1 tablespoon extravirgin olive oil • 1 small leek, trimmed and thinly sliced • sea salt and freshly ground black pepper • 180g frozen peas, thawed • 310ml milk • 50g butter, chopped • 50g plain flour • butter, extra, melted, for brushing • 140g finely grated Parmesan, plus extra, to serve • 4 eggs, separated • Preheat the oven to 180°C/gas mark 4. 2Fe2O3, aka iron oxide, is having a moment. An edgy alternative to gleaming metallics, the organic markings and naturally occurring colours of the chemical reaction have eroded on to the design sphere. The catalyst for the trend was the runway, with Emporio Armani’s catwalk coated in layers of warm brown, while the models at Alberta Ferretti were draped in fraying, rust-coloured sheers that seemed one step away from total disintegration.
