When I sat down to plan this issue, I couldn’t help but notice that May was also Mental Health Awareness Month. With quilting being something that many of us practise for our mental health, there was no doubt that I’d fill issue 124 with projects that would inspire happiness, calm and refuge from the pressures of the modern day. YE JIN SHIN How did you initially get into patchwork and Jogakbo? After majoring in Fashion Design at university in Korea, I worked as a visual merchandiser for more than decade. I wanted to find something new to be inspired by, besides the latest fashion trends. One day, I came upon a Hanok Village with traditional Korean houses and it was there that I learned Jogakbo. The beautiful colours of the traditional silk fabric blended so well with the Hanok, and I felt the greatest sense of accomplishment after carefully arranging the fabric and creating a new piece by hand. Clamshell designs are a perennial favourite amongst quilters, and we’re no different here at LP&Q! Adding a stylish effect to quilting projects of all sizes, clamshell shapes can create effective appliquéd designs and whole quilts with a tessellating, mesmerising quality. Whatever you make with it, we hope you love your handy new template! CUTTING OUT 1 Use the template to mark your fabric, by drawing around it with a removable fabric marker. TECHNIQUE FOCUS Matchstick quilting is a method of straight-line quilting where the quilted lines are repeated ¼in or less apart from each other: a matchstick apart. Using a walking foot and some careful marking, matchstick quilting can be a great way to add some texture to a quilt, without taking away from the quilt design. HOW TO DO MATCHSTICK QUILTING As with most quilting, the preparation is important. It is worth taking your time to baste the quilt to get a good flat surface to work with. Paula uses spray baste and presses the quilt top and backing thoroughly before basting. After spray basting, Paula likes to press the quilt again to set the spray and get out any creases and lumps.
