The inspiration for Carolyn Friedlander’s favourite collection that she’s created so far was sparked by a somewhat surprising source… cows. “I live in an area with quite a bit of farming and ranching, and I was noticing this cool thing that happened when cows grazed in a pasture,” she shares. “They would eat not just the grass, but the leaves off of trees as well.” While some may interpret this observation as unremarkable at best and unsightly at worst, Carolyn noticed a uniquely aesthetic quality to the natural process: “this resulted in a beautiful, visual break in the trees at the height a cow would graze, leaving no leaves. It was beautiful to see the branches curling around and exposed until this magical line where the leaves resumed. I thought…

Part of the beauty of quilting lies in precision. Isn’t there a wonder to the neat geometry of a finished quilt and the way the fabrics, shapes and colours come together in harmony? This creative destination can be reached by one of two paths. Makers can follow a pattern, or throw out the map and operate on instinct. The latter is known as improvisational quilting, or ‘improv quilting’: a go-with-the-flow approach to the craft we know and love.
