There are so many options for how to finish your quilt it can be a bit overwhelming. This issue we are looking at the method of hand-tying a quilt. A traditional method, hand-tying gives an heirloom look to your quilt and can be achieved with relative ease. REASONS FOR HAND-TYING ■ It’s quick - Unlike hand-stitching a quilt where a running stitch is completed across the quilt, hand-tying involves just one well-placed knot approximately every 6in. This makes the method very quick in comparison to other options. ■ A unique soft finish - Unlike machine quilting there are relatively few stitches holding the quilt together, so you get a wonderful soft drape. I was fortunate enough to be introduced to the joy of sewing whilst at primary school, learning cross stitch which I used to make my dad a bookmark. This was in the days before the National Curriculum when teachers had more choice and would go with what they loved. I remember a lot of singing. Singing and sewing. When it comes to sustainability, the textiles industry is, unfortunately, a serial offender. Just think about the discarded fast-fashion garments filling our landfills, and the water and energy used to produce fabric in the first place. According to a study conducted by Earth.Org in 2023, 92 million tonnes of textile waste ends up in landfill every year. And with 20,000 litres of water needed to produce just one kilogram of cotton, the impact on our planet is huge. In fact, up to 5 per cent of the textile industry globally is quilting related.
