Apple CEO Tim Cook recently opened up on Apple’s culture and the values of the company. In an informal interview with Marc Benioff, CEO of CRM software company Salesforce, Cook covered a wide variety of topics, from Steve Jobs to Apple’s environmental efforts to privacy. Q I’m still running Microsoft Office 2008 in Mojave, but I’m preparing to switch to Catalina and need to upgrade. We’re at something of an impasse regarding high res content. 4K is certainly starting to become more commonplace, with support from streaming services like Netflix and Apple TV+, 4K Blu-ray, and even 4K uploads on YouTube – but 8K is an exponential jump that asks a lot of both storage and bandwidth, one we’re possibly not quite ready for. One of the most notable stories to come out of Apple Arcade is that of Operator 41. This game didn’t have a big studio behind it – it was designed by a 14-year-old from London named Spruce Campbell. Q When copying large movies in the Finder, progress stops suddenly and the following error is shown: “The Finder can’t complete the operation because some data in “Filename.mov” can’t be read or written. When it happens during reading or writing files, it almost invariably means the source file is corrupt, or the destination file can’t be written properly. Tim Cook once said the iPad could be a ‘replacement for a notebook PC’. Weird flex for a guy who makes the world’s leading notebook PC, but OK, let’s see. Apple has taken the failure of Apple Maps so seriously, it has invested “billions” in updating the service. The disclosure was made in response to a House Judiciary Committee probe into antitrust violations. The company introduced its own mapping service in 2012, displacing Google Maps in the process. However, Apple’s Maps app quickly came under fire for its multiple bugs, incorrect directions and lack of public transport support amongst others. The fiasco allegedly led to the firing of Scott Forstall, and a public apology from Cook. However, the company has since been slowly improving the service. This isn’t the first time Apple has taken a stab at the world of gaming. Back in 1996 there was the Apple Pippin, a short-lived home entertainment system that was intended to be licensed out and expanded by third-party companies. It wasn’t just for games, but all CDROM content, as well as helping you browsing the nascent internet. OLED An evolution of traditional LED tech which adds a film of organic pixels to the screen, each of which can create its own light and colour output. Vastly improves contrast, brightness, and response times, but the use of organic materials can lead to burn-in over time. HDR10+ HDR means more colours, and more accurate reproduction. Where the old HDR standard optimised the colour and contrast of a picture based on the brightest frame in a scene, HDR10+ attaches metadata to every frame, dynamically altering tone mapping throughout for an optimal picture. To simplify login, most people tend to reuse their passwords, which is bad practice. To avoid this kind of repetition, password managers generate random passwords – usually a combination of numbers, letters and symbols so that they are harder to crack. In addition, the apps gather your credentials and store card details to make entering online details quicker and easier. Think of the information as being stored in a ‘vault’ that can only be accessed using a single master password. Apple’s own built-in iCloud Keychain works very well. The service offers unlimited storage of passwords and account information, syncs…

Choosing a winning password manager here is not easy. While the basics and security are common throughout, what differentiates the apps is their add-on features, ease of use and, of course, pricing. iCloud Keychain is great for the basics, but it’s disappointing that it’s not available when you’re using an alternative platform. Dashlane is comprehensive, but its interface is somewhat cluttered and hard to navigate. With fewer features on offer, LastPass and Keeper are very easy to use, but they’re also quite pricey considering that there aren’t many additional features.
