The App Store is overflowing with excellent touchbased titles, whether original affairs or smartly tweaked ports from other platforms, and more are being added each week. Missing pungent scents aside, Koloid is a mostly faithful interpretation of the 19th century collodion photo processing procedure. Like making prints in the darkroom, Koloid offers complete control over the final black-and-white image. The longer you rock the device back and forth to spread virtual chemicals across the image, the more “developed” it becomes—areas untouched by liquid wind up underexposed, but keeping it in one place too long creates a burned effect instead. Sure, it’s a gimmick, but it does deliver on the promise that no two photos are ever alike. Contra has never been easy, but in this iOS remake of the classic ’80s run-and-gun shooter, ample lives, new bonuses, and in-app purchases diminish the original experience. You certainly won’t need the iconic Konami code here, as you can just buy lives outright. Strip the necessary roughness from Contra’s bones and all that’s left is a sad husk trading on a venerable name. The “casual Contra” premise is a misfire, but where it really drops the ball is with its controls. CLOUDUP There are plenty of cloud-based storage services to choose from, but most fizzle when it comes to simplifying the task of uploading files and immediately sharing with friends, family, or coworkers. Cloudup is the latest cleared for liftoff, but a couple of limitations prevent it from getting off the launch pad quite yet. Cloudup is a clean, modest web app with OS X companion software that lives in the menu bar, waiting to upload files from the desktop. These can include music, photos, PDF documents, or just about anything else, including videos, which the creators of the service seem to have had in mind when they designed Cloudup. Apple’s new monolith-inspired AirPort Extreme follows what the company is calling a “top-down” design. We’re still not sure exactly what that means, but in this case, it’s about 6.6 inches from the top down to the bottom of the redesigned, vertically oriented Wi-Fi base station. Preview is OS X’s built-in program for viewing many different types of files, including PDFs (Portable Document Files). The PDF format is widely used to share many types of files, including forms and documents. Sometimes you need to sign and return these documents. However, you no longer need to print the document, sign it, and return the signed form by post. Usefully, Apple introduced a feature in OS X 10.7 that allows you to take a photograph of your signature and insert it straight into documents. Over the last week, our work environment has been a much happier place. We’ve listened to our favorite artists and discovered new favorites. The secret to this happiness is Muse, a fantastic little $5 app that does one job—stream Pandora radio stations—extremely well. When running, Muse sits in your menu bar. Opening the app lets you choose or create a Pandora station, based on artist or genre. As each song is played, you get a little pop-up that tells you its artist and album name. If it did just this one thing, Muse would be a good app. However, the keyboard shortcuts really make Muse stand out. Like it or not, Creative Cloud is now the only game in town for users who want the latest versions of their favorite Adobe creative applications for Mac, including Photoshop, InDesign, and Premiere Pro. It offers the same tried-and-true Zumba gaming experience, but lets you take it wherever you go, utilizing the front camera of the iPad to track your movements as you follow the instructions. Our first reaction to hearing about Moment was: isn’t most of this Facebook-posting stuff already in Mountain Lion, anyway? The answer is: yeah, kinda. What makes Moment appealing is it allows you to post photos, text, and videos to Facebook while also tagging people and your location (if you want to) from one easy-to-use menu-bar applet. Baked into OS X is the ability to post to your timeline from within Notification Center, or post a photo within iPhoto. So why bother with a separate app? FROM PDF TO POWERPOINT SLIDE I am using Microsoft Office 2011 for Mac to create PowerPoint presentation. I scanned a multi-page PDF and would like to add that to my presentation so that I can just click through the PDF without having to create a new slide for each page in the PDF. Is there a way to do this? Microsoft PowerPoint doesn’t play nicely with PDFs on the Mac. However, we can use the power of Preview and Automator to automate the process of converting the PDF to individual images, and then creating new slides based on those images. iPhoto is a great app to use to store your digital images and comes with numerous ways to help you keep them organized, such as placing them in Events or sorting them into albums. But both of these require a lot of manual work to keep them organized and updated each time you import more photos. It gets more complicated when you’d like the same photo to be stored in multiple albums, and keeping track of it all can become a bit of a headache. That’s where “smart albums” come in.
