I HAVE two firearms that have above normal value to me; one is a Mannlicher Schoenauer (1922) in 6.5x54mm (no, it’s not a carbine) and the other is a Unique Model L ‘Combo’ pistol/carbine (mid-1960s) in .22lr. I have spent a small fortune on the Mannlicher. For example, about 20 years ago, the die set cost me R950 (the price tag is still on the case), while that of a mainstream calibre like .308Win cost only R180. I only managed to track down the die set after a two-year search. CLEANING firearms, especially carbon and copper deposits from barrels, can be a toilsome effort, sometimes to the point of exhaustion. Through the years I’ve tried several methods and an array of chemicals but it remains hard work. The Schütze Firearm Care cleaning range consists of four different products aimed at making cleaning firearms easier. The products were developed in Germany and are distributed locally by Oelof Maree and his team at Omchem. WHEN it comes to gunsmithing and the manufacture of firearms related products, South African entrepreneurs rank among the best in the world. Silencers, or, more correctly, sound suppressors, for hunting and sporting rifles are currently very popular and we are fortunate in that many locals produce quality products to suit our diverse needs. Niel Herselman of Jeffreys Bay has joined the list of silencer manufacturers and I recently tried out one of his products on two of my rifles, a .30-06 Remington and a Howa in 6.5 Grendel. THE 7x25 is Kahles’ hunting monocular rangefinder, introduced in 2020, with a claimed 2 000 yards effective range, which should also make it an ideal tool for long-range shooting applications. The compact RF-M 7x25 offers an ergonomical design, basically two tubes that are joined in such a way that it follows the shape of the human hand. This makes it easy to hold the rangefinder comfortably during prolonged use in the field. It’s 102mm long, 78mm high and 38mm wide (all measurements at the widest point). BY NO stretch of the imagination could my maternal grandfather have been called a hunter or fisherman, but he knew with unerring accuracy the things that made a boy’s heart beat faster with excitement. VORTEX is an established and respected brand name worldwide, and the company has come a long way since introducing its first products. Their 1-8x24 Strike Eagle scope has an illuminated reticle in the first focal plane – a popular feature with many shooters these days. It has a 30mm tube and comes with flip caps for the lenses, a throw-lever for quick magnification adjustment, a sun shade, CR2032 battery, a lens cloth and a 2mm hex wrench. BLOEMFONTEIN KNIFE MAKERS CLUB ANNUAL EXHIBITION The Bloemfontein Knife Makers Club was founded in 1990 and although the main reason for its existence is to promote the art of knife making, there are also a few knife collectors associated with the club. WITHIN the first ten days of my safari with Tom and Penny Wegner of Texas, Tom had bagged a 55-inch greater kudu and a 7-foot leopard, which was all he wanted. At the start of the safari, Penny told me the only animal she’d ever shot was one whitetail deer with a .30-30 lever-action, but dearly wanted to hunt Big Five species. I found this somewhat daunting. However, I got her practising with my .30-06 Mannlicher and she was soon shooting well. Among other trophies, she bagged two lions, a good leopard, a 46-inch buffalo with 15-inch bosses and a greater kudu. Her lion went down writhing and growling like the devil. WHEN Editor Phillip Hayes asked me to write the obituary for the late Fred Mouton (July/August ’22 edition) he also asked me to specify my favourite Mouton cartoon. AS A LEGALLY armed citizen, for your own sake it is imperative you know the laws pertaining to personal defence and safe firearm handling. In 1999, an official Standard Operations Instruction was issued by Military Head Quarters which banned the firing of warning shots by soldiers who were deployed in crime prevention and combating operations together with the South African Police Service. This was as a result of injuries to innocent bystanders and damage to property as a result of warning shots fired during earlier military and police operations.
