Motsko, an experienced mate, loved the idea of a fishing tournament but wasn’t interested in handling the side bets. Sport-fishing vessels set off from Panama City to visit the Perlas Islands in search of sailfish and the ultimate quarry, the black marlin. In 1942, S. In the 1980s, his Marlin Mardi Gras was the first East Coast tournament to guarantee a six-figure purse, paired with lavish dockside hospitality and a blacktie awards ceremony at an Atlantic City casino owned by a then-little-known developer named Donald Trump.
