“I AM soooooo excited!” exclaimed my first-time-at-the-theatre-aged-9 companion with her sister, 12, beaming beside her as the lights dimmed and KickstArt’s South African premiere of The Emperor’s New Clothes began.
To be honest, I had not done my homework, and read up about the musical, assuming it would be a panto-type romp with known tunes and lots of audience yelling at the players to “look behind you!”. So as the music began, I froze – realising I had brought my first-timers to a sophisticated musical theatre show, and wondered just how much they would enjoy it.
