PRESIDENT Cyril Ramaphosa recently unveiled, for all intents and purposes, a ballooned Cabinet of 32 ministers and 43 deputy ministers, entrusting them with the weighty responsibility of governing South Africa for the next five years. But amid the fanfare, one appointment stands out for its sheer surprise value – Pieter Groenewald, as the new Correctional Services Minister.
While Groenewald’s competency, expertise and legislative experience are unquestionable, his appointment raises eyebrows.
Most notably, his political party, the FF+, noticeably omitted any mention of correctional services in their 2024 manifesto.
