Whereas most people are attracted to vintage clothing items for their colors or silhouettes, Natalie Lindsey sees something else. “Vintage has a soulfulness that new clothes often lack,” she says from her quaint Persa Place work studio in Houston, her hometown, to which she returned after years as a stylist and designer in New York and San Francisco. “I’ve drawn lines for so long that I know exactly how long they’re supposed to be,” says architect Jeremy Corkern. Even though this might seem to be a violation of the laws of geometry, in that a line is infinite in length, the New Orleans–based Corkern speaks a very real truth about how he works. Unlike most architects who create their proposed residential designs using sophisticated computer-aided design (CAD) systems, Corkern begins every idea with a sharpened pencil in hand. He then takes out one of his favorite olive-green notepads and begins rendering on paper the shape of the house he has in his imagination. Mary Holland, owner of Atlanta showroom Holland MacRae, hosted an intimate soirée in September in honor of the designer Ray Booth and the publication of his latest book, The Expressive Home: Architecture and Interiors (Rizzoli). Prior to signing copies of the book, MILIEU’s Design Director, Leslie Newsom Rascoe conducted a candid conversation with Ray, who is a partner of McAlpine and founder of Ray Booth Design, that focused on his upbringing in Alabama and the varied influences on his architecture and interior designs. Anyone who loves the color white as much as Rozanne Jackson does knows how difficult it is to get it right. White is, after all, the most complex color in the palette, with more variations and nuances than anything else in the spectrum. In Motion on Canvas and Paper Álvaro Llanza wants you to keep looking at his paintings and drawings. He wants you to both see something recognizable—and not. The Madrid-born, Houston-based painter describes his art as “abstract figuration. A century and a half ago, after a long and uncomfortable journey, people would stop off at what is now Linda Criswell’s house in Prescott, Arizona. Of the three separate buildings that occupy her property, interspersed as they are among tall pine trees, is a stagecoach stop that Criswell transformed into a onebedroom cottage, situated steps away from her main house and another smaller dwelling she refers to as the Doll House. “If you walk behind the house into the woods, you can still see traces of the trail that the stagecoach would follow,” says Criswell, co-owner and co-founder of Bungalow, a notable Scottsdale-based interior design source.
