INCREASED WORLD HEIGHT Perhaps the biggest change to this version of the game is that the world no longer stops where it used to! That’s right: now if you tunnel down to where bedrock used to be, you’ll find yourself encountering deepslate and an additional 64 levels of rock that you can explore. They are quite rare and hard to come by, but also extremely useful when you have enough of them! COLLECTING EMERALDS Emeralds can be mined from emerald ore, which generates in single block veins in the mountains and windswept hills biomes only. It is most common at level 256, though it can be found at levels -16 to 320. Mining emerald ore with an iron, diamond, or netherite pickaxe causes it to drop one emerald. BUILD SPECS It’s a simple one this month: all you have to do is build a Nether portal of any size – then decorate it! Nether portals look pretty dull on their own, so with a bit of architectural flourish you can turn even the simplest Minecraft feature into something awesome. Here are the things your build needs to have to qualify: A working Nether portal at the centre. Decoration covering or surrounding the portal frame. That’s it! STEP ONE: VISIT THE NETHER You can’t summon the wither without first collecting the stuff you need from the Nether. That means opening a Nether portal. You can either build one or restore a ruined one to working order – either way, you need to collect obsidian to do this. Obsidian can only be gathered using a diamond pickaxe, and forms naturally where water flows over lava source blocks – or you can plunder one ruined portal to repair another! Build a portal frame (at least four blocks wide and six obsidian high), then ignite the portal by using a flint & steel on the inside of it. They can be placed on the top and bottom of many blocks too, as long as that surface is next to avertical one.
