Mahatma Gandhi said, “It is health that is real wealth and not pieces of gold and silver.” Few words have more validity than these, in my opinion; we all know the importance of health and the hope and happiness it can afford. Conversely, even those with the most lavish of lives must find it difficult to enjoy themselves in the absence of good health. This is no front-page news. Because health is such a weighty and ubiquitous topic, we’ve once again decided to dedicate our April edition to wellness. While I enjoy putting all our issues together, this is one of my favorites. “I love color,” announces Jen Davison, interior designer for Collins DuPont Design Group. She explains that clients are often scared of color, preferring neutrals—especially in their homes. “Most people want a lack of color—requesting whites, creams, and beiges; there is something safe about neutrals, there is also a longevity,” says Davison. Color is not for everyone. Davison recounts how clients from Chicago wanted their home in Naples to be calm and serene; the chaos of living in a big city and busy careers were enough stimulation in their lives. Perhaps it’s her painting background, but Davison is not afraid to incorporate color in her designs. Her story begins in March 1957. A beautiful, blue-eyed baby girl was born to parents who, as young adults, emigrated from rural Ukraine to the multicultural city of Toronto in pursuit of a better life. For the first five years of her life, Hanya Kizemchuk spoke only Ukrainian. She eventually learned English in kindergarten, attending “Ukrainian school by night,” she recalls, where she studied the geography of the country, as well as the culture, language, and customs. If it feels like everyone’s on social media, you’re not wrong. According to Pew Research Center, 72 percent of U.S. adults used a social media site in 2021. There are many positive aspects of social media, from serving as an educational resource to building and maintaining relationships, according to Molly Modzelewski, licensed mental health counselor and co-owner of Serenity Counseling Associates of Naples. However, these platforms may also have negative effects on our mental health. Processed foods: Processed foods are loaded with refined carbohydrates and simple sugars that will raise your blood sugar very rapidly and crash it just as quickly. High-glycemic foods: The higher a food is in processed refined sugars (higher than 50 on the glycemic index), the more insulin your body pumps out to lower your blood sugar, causing it to crash. Most people have heard of cardio tennis, but cardio pickleball is catching on, too. At the Naples Pickleball Center, Nancy Robertson—an International Pickleball Teaching Professional Association certified instructor—teaches the one-hour class, which typically includes six to seven players. “Cardio pickleball classes offer a fast-paced version of the game,” says Robertson, a four-time U.S. Open pickleball champion. “I feed the ball, participants play out the point, and I quickly feed the ball again.” A “king-of-the-court” format is followed, which means if a player wins a point, they stay on the court and continue to play. Celebrating another trip around the sun this month at Naples Zoo at Caribbean Gardens is a 22-year-old male, black-handed spider monkey named April. This birthday boy is somewhat of a mama’s boy, too, especially when he’s frightened by bees, otters, and various other critters. “April is a sensitive soul who stays close to mom Savana for support,” shares Christiana Rizzo, primate keeper. While he goes bananas for bananas, he also enjoys sweet potatoes, hardboiled eggs, and nutritious monkey biscuits, which he soaks in water before consuming.
