My Facebook friends must hate it when I do this, but I’m going to get on my little high horse and add some social commentary about a conversation I watched unfold on Facebook recently. The conversation was brought about by an American hot rodders podcast that talked about how all the chequebook rodders and, to a greater extent, ‘trendsters’ (apparently that’s a word) are wrecking the scene. It’s a fair topic, and keeping an eye on the US scene, I can see where they’re coming from. Of course, this led to grizzles about how it’s happening here too; how people who don’t know anything are building cars that look ridiculous but, in the same breath, are winning all the trophies … The conversation went back and forth with multiple opinions…

For most Kiwis from outside the greater Auckland region, the town of Waiuku is likely to be known as the home of New Zealand’s steel industry, housing the massive New Zealand Steel mill. If Mike Janssen knew what he knows now, he probably wouldn’t have done what he did by rescuing this 1956 Ford Victoria. But if he hadn’t done what he did, he wouldn’t know what he knows now. To say that the car was rusty when he first got his hands on it would be a very polite understatement. Tim Wilson found himself V8-less when his mint one-owner ’67 Impala was off the road and undergoing a fairly substantial ‘resto-mod’ after an altercation with an uninsured driver. That fix up then turned into a rescue mission to retrieve the unfinished car from the receivers after the repairer went into receivership — but that’s a story for another day.
