2020 Covid survivor Terry Maynard talks to the editor about his life and the seven engines that he has owned over the past 52 years with his wife Val, who he married in 1966. Val was also a victim of Covid in March 2020 and was in a serious condition at one stage, but has thankfully pulled through and both have now recovered from the epidemic as best you can, stay safe says Old Glory. Since becoming the Chairman of the National Traction Engine Trust (NTET) Rob Clifford-Wing has effectively embraced the technology of Zoom calls to keep the Trust and its members and committees updated says Paul Richie. In February for the first time ever he arranged a large-scale Zoom call for members of NTET, and any other interested parties to join, entitled “Coming Clean About Coal.” The purpose of the call was described by Rob as to upskill attendees on the current issues relating to the supply and availability of coal for our movement. With over 300 people attending on their laptops and devices it was clearly a topic that drew interest both in the United Kingdom, and apparently worldwide. The Heritage Transport Show, organised by the Kent County Agricultural Society, that was set to return on Saturday 10 April 2021 has now been cancelled until later in the year, possibly July rumours suggest, but only time will tell. James Forknall, chairman of the Kent County Agricultural Society, said: “COVID-19 continues to impact our day to day lives and our ability to run events, but we want to bring some positivity by starting plans for later in the year. Other shows to be cancelled recently are the June Tractor Fest at Newby Hall, July’s Welland and Much Marcle rallies, but the Bath & West Show has been rescheduled for August Bank Holiday. Scotland’s longest serving transport museum director is to retire after 38 years in charge of one of the country’s most successful heritage venues. Hugh Dougherty reports that Mike Ward MBE, who has been in charge at Grampian Museum of Transport since 1983, and whose national honour recognises his work at the popular Alford museum, is stepping down at the end of the 2021 season. Now the search is on to find a replacement. Mike has worked with the museum trustees, staff and volunteers over nearly four decades to develop the museum which covers private and commercial motor vehicles, steam road traction, stage coaches, trams, buses, railways and bicycles. STICK, the Scottish Transport & Industry Collections Network, is putting the future of fossil fuels in heritage transport under the microscope, at a special online event on Thursday, 22 April. The body’s membership includes Summerlee Museum of Industrial Life, the Scottish Railways Museum, Maid of the Loch, the Scottish Maritime Museum and the National Mining Museum. The conference will look at the society-wide drive to cut emissions, which puts the focus on heritage transport, and the difficulty of obtaining steam coal to run steam railways and traction engines. In a break from tradition caused by the current pandemic, the BESTT AGM was held virtually on January 23rd. chairman Gordon Newton opened the proceedings by welcoming the participants and outlined the progress that had been made in difficult circumstances in 2020. During the first three months, the second year NHLF sponsored trainees in mechanical overhaul, started their basic training at the Haworth shed workshops of the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway. They later went on to continue and complete their module-based training at locations including the Severn Valley Railway, Kent & East Sussex Railway, North Norfolk Railway, Nene Valley Railway, Windermere Jetty Museum and the Great Central Railway. The well-known proprietor of railway and tramway book publisher Middleton Press of Midhurst, West Sussex, Vic Mitchell passed away peacefully on January 18 2021. There won’t be many rail enthusiasts who do not have at least one or more Middleton title on their bookshelf. A former dentist by profession, Vic and colleague Keith Smith launched his local Branch Lines to Midhurst in 1980 and 40 years later there are more than 500 books in the rail series from subjects across the UK. An early volunteer at the Talyllyn Railway and founder member of the Ffestiniog Railway Society, Vic latterly took on (as a labour of love) producing the National Rail Timetable after Network Rail ceased printing it in 2007. However Tasmania, Australia staged its annual Sheffield Steam Rally in early March and this was a great success with 14 engines attending. Sir Ian Blatchford, the director and chief executive of the Science Museum Group, has recently put out this statement: “It is with great sadness that I am writing to tell you that Dame Margaret Weston died at 94.” She was an outstanding figure in the history of the organisation, and director (1973-1986). She was the first woman to hold the position and the first woman ever to run a national museum. It was a directorship marked by ambitious collecting, regional expansion and her great devotion to education. Those of you who knew her would agree that she was a pioneering and impressive leader. Following a further review by the Great Dorset Steam Fair board of directors, it is with much regret and sadness that I confirm the 2021 Great Dorset Steam Fair (scheduled to take place from Thursday 26th to Bank Holiday Monday 30th August 2021) has been cancelled writes Martin Oliver. We have continued to closely monitor the Coronavirus pandemic over the past few weeks and whilst the ongoing vaccination programme is progressing well and should be commended, it has nevertheless become increasingly evident (as in 2020) that it is unfeasible to run the GDSF event again this year. Brian John Sims was born at Field House Farm Borrowash, just outside Derby on 1 September 1942 and soon developed an interest in farm machinery. Harvest was always a special time as Brian as he started to help out with the harvest team that came to the farm. Brian had soon joined the team and was going with them from farm to farm in the school holidays. At the age of 16 Brian left school and joined F H Burgess in Derby. Initially Brian was set to debt collecting, but after two years he was allowed out on the road on his own as a machinery salesman. Brian moved from Derby to the Burgess branch in Nottingham and then back to Derby, before moving to the Lichfield branch and finally…

If you have something for this column please send it to: colin.tyson@kelsey.co.uk The 2ft gauge railway at Amerton Farm in Staffordshire is home to three ‘unusual’ locos built by E.E Baguley of Burton-on-Trent in the 1930s-1940s, writes Phil Barnes. These machines are the 1935 built Trentham Express, formerly Golspie, loco No. 2085 and the 1939-built No. 3024 Dreadnought. Both are steam outline, diesel powered locomotives with mechanical transmission and thus not unreasonably known as ‘pretenders’. No. 2085 has been housed in the workshops undergoing restoration and its 60hp Perkins 4.270 diesel engine was started for the first time in over 20 years in April 2013. I was intrigued to see ‘Superb Dodman Miniature’ featured on the front of the September issue of Old Glory. I was even more surprised that from the photographs inside, the engine was the one I had made over ten years ago. Well, you always know your own and there are probably not many in those colours, LMS Crimson Lake and BR Signal Red. Actually, I must say Merv has looked after it well. Bristol-built Peckett loco number 1957 of 1938 was one of three ‘Baby’ Pecketts built for the Wilsons Portland Cement (WPC) Company of Whangarei and ironically all three are still extant in the world of preservation, writes Phil Barnes. This loco was the middle one of the three; the first being No. 1664 of 1924 (aka WPC 5) and the third was No. 2157 of 1955 (aka WPC 4). No. 1957 was numbered WPC 2. Their main duty was to move and shunt wagons along the timber-built wharf at this large cement making complex, for which their light weight of 11 tons made these little 0-4-2Ts more than suitable. All four are scale models and are: The Snow, a Tandem, Double-Acting Engine, the Two Cylinder Nash, the Bruce Macbeth 4-cylinder upright, and the horizontal two cylinder Titan 50 HP engine. All these engines feature a cylinder bore of around 1" and other than the flywheels are designed to be fabricated.
