Possibly the biggest special feature at a rally in 2025 will be at the Weald of Kent Steam and Country Show at Woodchurch near Ashford, Kent on 2-3 August. This will be the Chris Lambert Gathering. There are basically 50 engines that exist in preservation that passed through Lambert’s hands. Chris Lambert died suddenly on 4 March 1955 from a heart attack. He was taken ill in the morning and died at approximately 11.30am, and his funeral took place on 9 March. MARSHALL LIGHT TRACTION ENGINES - BACKGROUND In 1906 the Britannia Iron Works launched a new generation of agricultural traction engines, aimed at overseas markets, known as the ‘Gainsboro’ Light Traction Engine. Over the next eight years six variants and around 355 engines were manufactured in types 1 and 2, including type 1A which had boilers conforming to Scandinavian regulations, all rated at 6hp; types 3 and 4 rated at 7hp; and type 6 rated at 8hp, with a tandem compound cylinder option. The 1909 Marshall catalogue stated that this new design of engine, although considerably lighter than the ordinary type of traction engine, was of high-class construction throughout, durable and economic with extreme handiness of working. Just before Christmas 2024 Eddie Fox visited the UK to see his 1914 Robey 6hp single-cylinder No. 33348, Z200, which has now been tidied up and fully repainted by James Allison who as usual has done an excellent job. Eddie’s engine is set to make its first official rally appearance at the Innishannon Rally on 1-2 June. The weather forecast for southern England on New Year’s Day did not sound promising, however having left home in the dry I was hopeful of staying ahead of the rain, but it was not to be, says Allan Bedford. I was pleased to see Heath Henly’s GM-2 stroke powered Bedford TM artic, originally a Leicester main dealer’s demonstrator. Heath’s father Mike ran a number of these before becoming an all-ERF fleet. His former depot in Winterhay Lane is now covered with houses. However the vehicles present made the journey worthwhile, so having seen and recorded the best and got soaked in the process I soon left for home, but I’m looking forward to the season starting ahead.…

It will be 75 years since Arthur Napper and Miles Chetwynd-Stapylton DFC had a race in July 1950 with their traction engines, which unknown to them at the time would be a major part in forming the steam preservation movement. A celebration event will take place in Appleford, Oxfordshire OX14 4PH on 21-22 June 25. It is intended to invite every engine that attended an Appleford rally between 1950 and 1971 and have a traditional traction engine rally as they were in the early days. OXFORD DIECAST New from Oxford in 1/76 scale is a ‘Ford County tractor’ with its equal-sized front and rear wheels [1]. The RRP is £13.95. Although built with many Ford components, County was a brand in its own right, with tractors assembled at Fleet in Hampshire by County Commercial Cars Ltd. The long-nose County 1884 was the last and largest tractor they produced, launched in 1980. It was based upon the Ford TW-30, fitted with a 188bhp turbocharged and intercooled 401S engine. The extended bonnet contained the main fuel tank and oil-cooler. The Ford straddle Q-cab was air-conditioned, but the cost of the tractors was high, with only a handful built before the firm went into receivership in February 1983. An excellent combination of photographs and information about the owners and the tractors in general. Having had my ‘knuckles rapped’ so to speak over my openly expressed views regarding the utterly inaccurate rubbish quoted on many internet sites and in various publications about Turner tractors, I like the way you phrased the parentage of the tractors as being designed by Malcolm Robson with Freeman Saunders combustion chambers. A s its name suggests, Vectis Auctions began on the Isle of Wight, Vectis being the Roman name for the island. The business was established in 1988 as a collectors’ shop by Roger and Jill Mazillius, who then started to organise regular specialist toy and model auctions, as regular auction houses were only including some of these amongst their general sales. Auctions were held in Guildford Civic Hall, on the mainland, with a room full of collectors and dealers all attending in person, typically eight times a year. Later the shop closed as the auctions took off. In 1996, the business was bought by Bryan Goodall and now occupies a 30,000 sq. ft. auction site in Thornaby-on-Tees, near Middlesbrough. Vectis currently employs 52 staff. They now hold over 70 auctions…

First impressions were of a car park that was filling up nicely early on Sunday morning, it was a relief to discover that the ground was firm under foot as the proceeding week there had been showers and rain had fallen from Saturday afternoon and through the night. A stiff breeze was blowing off the Atlantic, Padstow Bay could be seen in the distance, and there was more sunshine than cloud. The rally site was large and well laid out, the thoroughfares were a bit churned up but the surface mud was quickly drying up. Ångslup 45 is a steam powered lightweight craft that was carried by the Swedish coastal defence ship Wasa and served as a ‘tender’ to this ship, writes Phil Barnes. This 12-ton vessel was built circa 1901/2 at the Karlskrona naval shipyard as one of a series of six. This location is over 100 miles east from Malmö in the south of the country. The Ångslup-type of boat (which translates as ‘steam sloop’, or perhaps more commonly known as a steam pinnace) had a crew of four to operate her and is powered by a two-cylinder compound engine, supplied with steam from a coal-fired Yarrow water-tube boiler. The mother ship, Wasa, was taken out of service during the 1940s and this sloop was decommissioned sometime after. In 1958 she was donated…

Henry Dixon has entered his 1928 John Deere 1.5hp in the Cheffins Vintage Collective on Saturday 26 April at Sutton, Ely, Cambridgeshire stationary engine sale with starts at 9am. Viewing and other sales take place on Friday 25 April. Alan C Cullen reports on a real cracker of an event which took place during the festive season at Prickwillow Drainage Museum, Ely, Cambridgeshire. The season ended with a cracker on Sunday 8 December, the last open day for the 2024 season at this museum which houses many of the engines that have spent their working lives draining the fenland. The engines are housed in the former pumping station building, with the main attraction being the 1924 by Mirlees Bickerton & Day of Stockport engine. This is a five-cylinder engine which in its heyday was capable of consuming 10 gallons of fuel per hour. Its flywheel weighs in at 6 ½ tons. On Saturday 7 December H J Pugh held its annual Festive Vintage Collective Sale which saw some 1,900 lots come through the doors at Ledbury. Sale two started at 9.30am inside the glamorous showroom buildings and featured 52 stationary engines, mostly from one collection. There were certainly many Lister D engines as part of this sale, none were that exciting to be honest, but, they were not as rough as some one sees at sales. However, the highlight was the original style open-crank Tangye that was said to have been in running condition, but I would suggest, it hadn’t been running in the last few years. It worked on an Oxfordshire estate in its earlier life; there was no identification number plate on the engine unfortunately, but it looked similar…

A llan Bedford was recently travelling to Torrington, via the road past Winkleigh. He had the surprise of his life when approaching David Hoare’s shed as on the forecourt on a low loader behind an ERF sat the very rare 1930 Gilford AS6/DF6 50cwt van, owned by Nick Sargeant of Henley-on-Thames who also has the 1935 Gilford coach. The resident Winkleigh team are working on the AS6/DF6 Lycoming petrol engine. The Leyland Retriever seen next to the Gilford (made at High Wycombe) is owned by Pete, the resident mechanic, who told our reporter that it was used by an Ashburton garage before going to the Lincolnshire Transport Museum who used it for recovery work. They removed the engine for a bus and the Retriever was set aside until recently returning…

On Saturday 4 January the NVTEC staged their first-ever New Year’s event at Fendick’s Fisheries, Whittington in Norfolk. The event turned out to be a huge success and is certainly something needed in the area. The weather was warmer and less windy than on New Year’s Day which helped matters. There was a fine turnout of just about everything including steam and people as well. It certainly looks set to become an annual event which is very much needed in East Anglia at this time of year. It has recently come to light that the police have confirmed to the FBHVC that road cameras which are picking up people who flout the law for not wearing a seat belt or using a mobile phone do not differentiate what year the vehicle is. Unfortunately pre-1965 vehicle owners who do not have to carry seat belts by law have already been caught out. The FBHVC have issued guidance over the matter. If you are picked up in a pre-1965 vehicle and are issued with a Notice of Intended Prosecution by the police you must contact the force that has issued it to you in the first place with a copy of your log book. There are two metre-gauge railways in Saxony close to Dresden. The steam festival at Radebuel to the west of the city was described in OG 413. Taking the local S3 train to Tharand and alighting at the suburban station of Freital Hainsburg, about 32km (20 miles) from Dresden, the other railway heads south, to Kurort Kipsdorf, a location in the hills and situated almost on the border with the Czech Republic. Called the Weißeritztalbahn, this one operates similar types of locomotives to those on the line to the west of Dresden. It has been in existence since 1883 and steam locos still feature on its services on a regular basis. Until not so many years ago, connections between the different islands and peninsulars which form Denmark, as well as links to other countries, were the preserve of a large fleet of ships, including train ferries, which belonged to the Danish State Railways [DSB], writes Kevin Hoggett. These vessels have now been superseded by bridges and tunnels but their memory lives on, due in part to a large dedicated section of the Danish National Railway Museum in Odense which boasts an extensive model collection as well as many artefacts and a recreated cabin from one of the ships. Driving east from Odense towards Copenhagen and passing over the Great Belt Bridges, which replaced the ferries in 1998, motorists are likely to be surprised to see one of the old DSB ferries…

Well the season started for stationary engine owners in 2025 in East Anglia, when the NVTEC East Anglia held its first event of the year on Saturday 4 January. Whilst there was the threat of snow in various parts of the UK, in Norfolk that was not part of the occasion at all. There were plenty of engines at this event, which proved to be very popular. Gatherings such as this are certainly the way ahead I am sure. They are good fun, as one can chat with friends, talk about your restoration project, possibly buy and sell some parts, even do a deal on an engine. Even though the general public are really not part of these events, it doesn’t matter, perhaps it’s the way our hobby is going.…

Mark Garbutt’s article about his Bagnall Demon petrol-paraffin engine in the December issue, along with reference to the correspondence he had with my late friend and co-author of several books on the firm of WG Bagnall Limited, TD Allen Civil, reminded me of my interest in these engines says Allan C Baker. On Saturday 12th October 2024 the Foden Society unveiled a blue plaque to Edwin Foden in recognition of what he brought to Elworth, Cheshire. The plaque was placed on his old house at 22 Hill Street, says Chris Wallwork. To help celebrate the day, the Mayor of Sandbach Anne Nevitt unveiled the plaque while a selection of the Foden Band played a number of pieces. Two steam engines roaded to the event, the oldest known Foden traction engine 1899 6hp compound No.443 Victoria of the Bowens family and Mike Wilkinson had his timber tractor 1928 Foden No.13266 George here. Following on from the announcement in the December Old Glory that Jeff Burgess was selling 1917 Fowler BB ploughing engine No. 14712 Wilbur, the deal has been done. The engine is staying locally in East Sussex and will be moving to its new abode in the spring of 2025.…

Another location visited by Belgian reader Stefaan Balyu whilst in Sweden last September was the Saab museum at Trollhättan. Adjacent to that was an out-of-use railway iron swingbridge over the river/canal which celebrates being 110 years old this year. Preserved in the museum was the first ever Saab car constructed - in its original condition. Adjacent to the Saab museum there was also the Innovative Science Centre outside of which was a plinthed locomotive on display under its own protective cover. This was an ex-Statens Jarnvagar (State Railways) 4-6-0 No. 1320, constructed locally by Nydqvist & Holm AB - Bofors-Nohab AB, (NOHAB) in 1917 - Works No. 1115.…

Today, the 0-6-0T, NZR number Y542, is part of the MOTAT collection and can be seen running on their short Western Springs Railway in Auckland. However, the loco’s origins go back to 1923, since that was the year when she was delivered to NZ’s Public Works Department (PWD) along with two ‘sister’ locos for use during the construction of the North Island’s railway network, advises Phil Barnes. This loco is the sole-surviving Hunslet-built ‘steamer’ in New Zealand - all other examples having been scrapped, so she’s something of a rare beast indeed! Some of 542’s history is of interest. At one time the loco was employed on constructing the line to Gisborne - but by 1945, along with her two Hunslet ‘sisters’, she had been sold to NZR’s Maintenance Branch…

STATIONARIES STAR AT NEW EVENT It was on Saturday 4 January that the NVT&EC East Anglia branch staged their first ever New Year’s event at Fendick’s Fisheries, Whittington, Norfolk and as we have said in other parts of this magazine, it turned out to be a huge success. The stars were the stationary engines without doubt, which we are told amounted to some 35, of all types, popping and steaming away. Dear Editor Whilst sorting through some of my oldest slides I came across this one taken in the early 1970’s on a visit to my uncle who lived near Stelling Minnis, Kent. It must have been shortly after the mill had been acquired by Kent County Council for preservation and subsequent restoration, as the mill was still owned and worked by the Davidson family until 1970. The picture shows the Hornsby hot bulb paraffin engine installed second hand by Holman Bros of Canterbury in 1923. I ask, does the engine still exist in the mill and if so does it still run?
