The funeral of the much missed Norfolk-based long term lorry operator, tractor and lorry owner and Commer TS3 expert Bernie Bailey was held on 21 March at Caston Parish Church, near Attleborough, Norfolk. It was extremely well attended, and Bernie’s family have asked to thank everyone for the cards, condolences and donations left at the church. In total, £2,340 was raised in Bernie’s memory for the Meningitis Trust. This is an extremely impressive total which shows the respect and affection for Bernie within both the classic lorry and tractor fraternity and the wider community.…

Good news for those of you visiting Hollycombe Steam In The Country near Liphook - their 1931 Andrew Barclay 0-4-0 No. 1995 which was new to Durham County Water Board at their Burnhope Dam project is back in steam. After completion the engine went to Raisby Quarries, County Durham before being sold to Dinorwic Quarries and she worked at Port Dinorwic harbour on shunting duties. After Dinorwic closed the fleet of engines was put up for sale and she was the first engine Commander Baldock purchased and ran successfully until 2007, when her firebox and bent frames needed major work. Recently spotted by OG writer Allan Bedford while viewing the Haynes Museum at Sparkford, Somerset recently is this superb and rare in the UK 1921 Stanley 735 steamer saloon. The final adjustments were being made when Old Glory called in to see the amazing workmanship that has been carried out to 1916 Burrell 7hp single No. 3728 Prince. The boiler assembly was condemned last year and in September it was stripped to pieces in Jeff’s yard at Cross In Hand, East Sussex. During the winter and spring a new boiler assembly has been made to the correct original specification with new hornplates along with flanged backhead and throat plates and firebox made by David Bicknell. These and more were fitted by the team of Jeff Burgess, Alex Hume and Tom Beckett along with a new boiler tubeplate in the new boiler barrel. With new tubes the engine was in steam by April and with the assembly all back together…

During a cruise ship stop at Kiel in Northern Germany, OG correspondent Phil Barnes noticed a small steam ship moored to the rear of its berth and upon closer investigation, this vessel was identified as the SS Bussard of 1906 (IMO number 8779528). Fortunately, from information about the vessel on a quayside display board, it has been very easy to find interesting details about this craft. Her history started when she was built at the Meyer Werft shipyard of Papenburg in Lower Saxony between 1905 and 1906. Her role was given as a ‘buoy tender;’ the purpose of which was to lay and maintain navigation buoys, initially being stationed at Sonderburg. After World War 1, in 1919, a move to Kiel took place where she ‘looked after’ the sea markers…

Well it’s nearly July already, halfway through the season and many of you have been out with your engines all across the UK and Ireland which is good to see. Two rallies that I recommend this month are both the same weekend starting, with the Welland show on 25-27 July. I used to go to this rally especially to see the amazing East Coast, USA made Abenaque Machine Works shaft-drive engines that adorned these events for years, but where are they now? The other rally is of course the HMT show in The Netherlands which is to feature National this year. David Wallace says, nestling in the foothills of the Northern Pennines, lays the quaint village of Eastgate in Weardale. The scars of a couple of 100 years of man mining the hills for rich minerals are all around. The spoil heaps scatter the valley, whilst the remains of the once vast Eastgate Cement Works stand as testament of a more recent industry. It is on this site that the next generation of industry is to be created, with the extraction of water containing Lithium that has just been approved by the planners. For years the requirement to pump out water from the mines was a costly, but vital, part of the operations, now that same water is to breathe new life into the area and provide much needed employment. Old Glory says congratulations to Keith Grimsay from Norfolk who has recently purchased from the widow of Henry Netherhay of Hereford 1912 Marshall 3hp portable No. 59763. The engine was total rebuilt by the editor with a new boiler, firebox, backhead and more from 1986-90. After it appeared at the GDSF Robert Coles-organised Marshall celebration it hibernated for 26 years before the editor sold the engine to Jack Thwaites who later moved it on to the late Henry Netherhay. Keith intends to debut the engine at the Weeting Rally over 18-20 July; he will make and intends driving a small stone crusher with it.…

It’s with deep regret that we have to report the passing of Stephen Watson, the president of the National Vintage Tractor & Engine Club, following a short illness. He was a familiar face, particularly on the northern circuit and at the GDSF for many years with notebook and camera in hand reporting for the NVTEC Vaporiser magazine for decades. Locally to him he would exhibit one of his stationary engines and was very much part of the preservation movement. Stephen did much good over the years for the movement and propped up the NVTEC in rough times; he was always willing to stop and chat to any enthusiast on agricultural matters. On its way to have a new boiler, hornplates and firebox and more at Bicknell’s Boiler Works is Ben Nicholson’s fabulous Fowler B6 No.14115, XC9653 The Lion. In the distant past major boilerwork took place on this engine when being rebuilt from a wreck by others, however it is now totally unsatisfactory to the boiler inspector and it is basically a start-again job under David Bicknell’s personal skilled hand.…

Jimmer Marsh has been working hard with David Bicknell on the total rebuild of the boiler assembly on 1928 Foden C-type No.13138 London Pride which has been completed since these pictures were taken. It is certainly up to a very high standard as you might expect.…

It was sad news from Andrew Waling, who has informed us that his father Peter passed away just before Christmas 2024. In a tribute to his father Andrew is rallying the last engine he owned, William Foster & Co Ltd new-build single-cylinder tractor Annie. It looked superb in its black livery and was making its debut at the Stradsett rally here. Andrew’s family are very much enjoying taking the engine out and about this year, while their Aveling & Barford roller’s boiler work is nearly finished at Mervin Mayes’ works. Unfortunately their famous showman’s tractor Foster No. 14589 Lord of the Isles will then come inro the workshop for major boiler repairs.…

When he visited the Open Air Museum of Steam Machines in Silesia, Poland - located at Tarnowskie Góry - Michael Ward reported in OG 415 on his findings there which included a number of stationary steam engines and a steam roller. In the museum, some 50km (30 miles) to north of Katowice, there were also a number of industrial steam locos on display which were photographed as well. These included examples from wellknown European manufacturers but others were constructed by local firms, examples of which have never been seen in the UK. It should be pointed out that despite information boards being provided for most of the exhibits, these were in the local language and ‘official’ listings of them tend to refer in some instances to the more accepted names…

Just to point out to you stationary engine collectors, as we were going to press H J Pugh have nearly 40 engines booked in for their 21 June HQ Ledbury sale, which is building up to be something special, there are some tasty lots entered. These include Hamworthy engines including a 1916 5hp No.11173 and 4hp example No.27030 and a fine 1933 Bamford 2hp horizontal No. 20908 so get in there! It was good to see at Abbey Hill in May the H J Pugh December 2024 sold Blackstone DB 4hp diesel of Calvin Mykytyn. It has been placed on a trolley since he obtained it and was running well.…

Reader Andy Watson kindly wrote in to tell us he came across this engine on 2 April, still in situ in a field pumping hut on a hill above a farm in the East Mendips, with a small reservoir tank attached. It was hard to read the circa 1950 Lister diesel 2.6hp makers plate, unfortunately it is seized up, but looks fairly complete and restorable. The once associated pump had been removed, probably by the farmer for use elsewhere. The Fintown Railway, home to the only operational County Donegal Railways diesel railcar, has said that it will be back on track for summer 2025. The announcement comes after what was billed as a crisis meeting held in Fintown in December 2024 to elect a new management committee, at which doubts were raised about the future of train operations over the former CDR branch line towards Glenties. The successful election of a new committee has now ensured the line’s survival and future development Marking the 30th year since initial heritage services were established in 1995, the railway now says that it will operate three days per week in June, five in July and August and less frequently in September, with full details on the railway’s website. It’s sad to report the passing of Will Polhill of West Hoathly, Sussex; he was in his 90s. Will was a great Fordson man who used them in working times, particularly in the timber business which ran four-wheel steer Latil and Unipower tractor units in the 1950s-60s. Along with his brother Jack they had amassed a fine collection of tractors, parts and implements featuring Case, Minneapolis-Moline and John Deere to name a few. They were taken to shows on Jack’s Bedford lorry which he used daily in his business, Jack sadly died some years back before his brother. Will’s Weeks hop garden Fordson Standard N is still rallied in the area by Anthony Bradford today. They were great supporters of the July Ardingly Rally and Rotherfield Working and were members…

Following the advertisement in Old Glory in the autumn of 2023, Roger Mortimore sold the Bedford TK WHA665H that houses his Dutch fair organ which he and Margaret owned for some 34 years. The new owner is Sean Barrington and with the help of his brother-in law Simon Ludbrook they are trying to trace the early history of the Luton-bodied lorry. It’s suggested that the lorry was with a removal company in possibly Warley or Smethwick in the Midlands. After having a boiler inspector look at 1918 Clayton & Shuttleworth 7hp traction engine No. 48154 NM1161 before purchasing it, Neil Ayres went ahead and did the deal at the end of 2021 and enjoyed getting used to the engine and rallying the Clayton the following year. It was a big shock when another boiler inspector looked over the engine for its annual report and it was discovered the inner hornplate rivets had crystallised and when given a hammer test just broke off! The engine was taken to Mervin Mayes’ premises when the essentially good firebox which Bicknells had fitted some 30 years ago along with a new boiler was removed. This enabled the replacement of the hornplate rivets except the steering bracket rivets, which Bicknells had replaced decades ago.…

ABC BRIANZA The Italian specialist model car firm ABC Brianza was established in 1973 by Carlo and Ella Brianza. After Carlo passed away in 1994, his son Andrea and daughter Laura took over the running of the company which is based near Lake Como, if you fancy a visit to their showroom and shop. Many of their models over the years have been of Italian cars, unsurprisingly, including collaboration with Fiat and Lancia to produce promotional models, but they have also produced other makes in model form. Nowadays these are mostly resin models with fine photoetched metal parts. Amongst these are a number of Rolls-Royce models, with two unusual bodied versions recently released. When the Chairman of the Road Roller Association, Richard Newman, went to South Australia in March, it was a couple of weeks prior to the Booleroo Steam & Traction Preservation Society’s annual rally at Booleroo Centre - some 200 miles to the north of the State’s capital, Adelaide. He made special arrangements to visit the showground and was treated to an informative and in-depth tour of the rally grounds by the President, Ed Howell. Richard very much appreciated this since there are some very old and rare machines in the Society’s collection. He was particularly interested in the unique Fowler oil-engined tractor which dates from 1913 and which was previously featured in OG 318 in August 2016 and was seen by him during a visit there in 2014. Another splendid discovery has been made by Old Glory’s friend in Germany, Busso Hennecke. He’s come across information about a little-known manufacturer of steam vehicles in the period after World War 2, at the time when conventional liquid fuels there were in very short supply. Assistance is also acknowledged from Christoph Beyer. The firm of Dias was started in 1946 and closed in 1950. It was named after it’s founder - Diplom-Ingenieur A. Simon. Unfortunately very little has seemingly been committed to the records about the firm’s achievements but such information as has been discovered has indicated that designs included both steam buses and wagons which were to have been made in Rheinsberg (Mark) near Berlin. Sadly, no photographs of such vehicles have come to light but advertising literature exists…

The biggest tractor and engine show in Europe is the Historish Festival in Panningen in the South West of The Netherlands. It takes place this year on 26-27 July and is in its 44th year. The editor has taken many parties to this event over the decades and thanks to Des Boughton was able to attend the 2024 event. Each year it has one major theme, last year it was Hanomag and this year it is National engines and will feature Van de Gebroeders Boonstra’s 1901 type KA, 4hp portable, which looks superb from the illustration seen. There were over 300 + engines amongst the 2,400 tractors last year, including a large selection of very large engines and we illustrate just a few of them here which the editor came…

Ricky Kemp from East Anglia has been in touch to say “Do you remember at Newark last November I asked you what you thought of me finding a Crossley 1030 to go with my 1060 and restore it the same and you said what an excellent winter project, go for it!” Ricky looked at a number, before finding one through an advert in Old Glory. The valves needed some work and the hit and miss governor rod needed sorting and various other things, including to the magneto and mixture screw. It fired up in late February and ran well first time of running. Further work was done including a fine paint job as always. However Ricky’s engines are not just paint jobs, they go just as well as they look…

Seen at Stradsett, on the 2025 Haddenham Steam Rally Milestones Rally stand, which is celebrating its 50th Anniversary rally on 6-7 September, along with the 70th anniversary of the East Anglia Traction Engine Society. I would say the stationary engine section of this rally is exceptional and the stand here at Stradsett represented all that was good about it. Staring on the stand was stationary engine ‘guru’ Terry Young’s concours style 1916 Amanco Mule Team 6hp No.608429 gas engine, which is nothing but a stunner to see and enjoy and which worked so impressively at the show. It contrasted with the North West Stationary Engine Ltd ‘baby’ Association 1925 Amanco 2.25hp with Amanco gear type water pump, which was good to see. Do make a date for this rally as…

Alan Cullen says the history of this event goes back to the 1970s, when the late Paul Englemann started it at Shire Hill. In 2015 the East Anglian Traction Engine Society, which is celebrating its 70th anniversary this year, revived it and it eventually came to this site, at the Carver Barracks, four years ago. It took place over 28-29 April. There were just eleven engines, mainly owned by local enthusiasts with a couple of interlopers, including myself. The section was left for the enginemen to control themselves, as the SE marshal had given the job up at short notice and the organisers were unable to fill the void in such a short space of time. The weather was kinder this year as the rain never gave up in 2024…

While travelling in the UK at the beginning of May, the editor’s Dutch tour group called into the Lambourn Vintage Machinery Society’s event on Sunday 4 May. Conditions were rather overcast and not very warm, compared to what we had been experiencing days before. However, this show has been going for decades, I last came to it when it was on another site in the 1990s. It was known for its autojumble and exhibits that only came out at this event. It was sadly decimated by the weather in 2024 and was embarking on a rebuilding process in 2025. The highlight was however that the editor was able to obtain a bucket full of quality spanners for 20p each! All classes were represented here, with 15 stationary engines taking part…

The biggest display of stationary engines in the early season was at Abbey Hill, Yeovil, Somerset over 2-5 May, when 175 engines were seen, all types and sizes. It was excellent, with a number of exhibitors also offering lots of SE autojumble and engines at the same time. The winner of the stationary engine section went to Jon Leah from Cornwall and his 1924 throttle governed Lorenz which he has recently acquired and it looked good. Aumann Auctions held its Gas Engine Pre1930 Sale, with the first part concluding at 6pm 1 May online and the second on 2 May. Prices were very strong in places and there were over 200 engines offered in this two-day sale, the largest so far this year. The highest was £36,278 for the rare grade 3 1903 White & Middleton 5hp, they had been making engines since 1889 and started out as basically copies of the Otto engine with slight modification. Charles White and Arthur R. Middleton were based in Baltimore, MD and were around to 1911 when White bought Middleton out to call the company Charles White Gas Engine Co. This engine no. 2003 was manufactured in 1903, as indicated by the date stamped under the cylinder water funnel.…
