2 HOURS In 17th century Holland a trend emerged for larger-than-life paintings of still-life flower arrangements. Galvanized by the fledgling disciplines of botany and horticulture at the time, Dutch artists like Jan Brueghel the Elder, Ambrosius Bosschaert and Roelandt Savery painted bulging bouquets brimming with allegory. Impossibly overblown arrangements full of tangling stems and masses of overlapping blooms were typical pieces of work for the time, and these collections of luscious art would go on to influence both painting and flower arrangement for centuries to come. We’ll take inspiration from the Dutch masters for this project to craft our own ‘impossible’ flower arrangement. Benro has announced a new and innovative ‘smart’ tripod head called the Polaris. It has electrical controls and programmable features that are accessed via an app, and can be connected to your camera remotely for complex operations such as shooting panoramas, timelapses and focus stacks. While products such the Camranger 2 or the Smartta SliderMini 2 offer features that allow you to control your camera and/or perform some kind of movement, we’ve not seen tripod heads include features like these before. Black and white remains one of the most popular genres of photography. Like all photography publications, we receive a huge number of monochrome images from photographers around the world, demonstrating a near-universal appreciation for the power of simplicity, light and shadow – the fundamentals of any image. The winners of the 2020 Travel Photographer of the Year contest have been revealed, showcasing spectacular images captured around the globe and giving us a welcome shot of escapism in a year where travel has been limited for most of us, while perhaps also reminding us what we’re missing out on. Almost 25,000 images were submitted from photographers in 147 countries, with Vladimir Alekseev crowned overall winner for his portfolio of images that featured a mix of landscapes, wildlife and people.
