MANUAL MODE Drew shoots in Manual mode, which allows him to dial in the shutter speed, aperture and ISO values he wants, overriding his camera’s built-in metering, which would alter his settings if filters were added or the lighting changed. He set up Andy’s camera to also shoot in Manual mode, and advised Andy to regularly check the exposure of images on his rear screen, and make adjustments to settings as and when needed. Aremarkable image of fish mating has won Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2021. The image, by French underwater photographer Laurent Ballesta and titled Creation, captures the rare sight of camouflage groupers leaving a mating frenzy off islands in French Polynesia. The grouper season is a fleeting event, lasting just an hour, and only taking place under a full moon in July and with a waning tide. Ballesta and his team spent thousands of hours planning the underwater shoot over five years. “The image works on so many levels: it is surprising, energetic and intriguing, and has an otherworldly beauty,” said jury chair Rosamund Kidman Cox. Nikon has announced the Nikkor Z DX 18-140mm f/3.5-6.3 VR – and it could be the only lens that many Nikon Z50 and Z fc owners need, covering a wide range of focal lengths from wide-angle to mid-range telephoto. Previously, owners of these cameras were limited to the Nikkor Z DX 16-50mm f/3.5-6.3 VR kit lens and the Z DX 50-250mm f/4.5-6.3 VR telephoto. The new lens helps prop up Nikon’s rather thin-looking DX mirrorless lens range. The focal range is the same as the Nikon’s AF-S DX Nikkor 18-140mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR DSLR lens, but this lens is significantly shorter and lighter, and has a slightly narrower f/6.3 maximum aperture at full zoom. 1 GET UP EARLY, SHOOT LATE Shoot in the golden hour after sunrise or before sunset when the sun is closer to the horizon, and when you can play with elongated shadows and the wonderfully warm colour palette. 2 AVOID HARSH MIDDAY SUN When the sun is directly above you in the middle of the day it can cause very harsh shadows. 1 HOUR Shutter speed controls how long a camera’s shutter is open for, and therefore the length of time for which the sensor is exposed to light. However, just as with aperture and ISO, there’s more to shutter speed than basic exposure control. The faster the shutter speed, the more likely it is that movement will be frozen, and the slower the shutter speed the more likely you’ll capture motion blur. HOT SHOT #1 ANDY SAYS St Cwyfan’s Church, also known as the ‘the church in the sea’, is situated on an island that looks best at high tide, when it’s surrounded by water. We approached from Aberffraw onto a beach that would give us the perfect viewpoint to shoot from afar, zooming in with a long telephoto lens. Drew used his 70-200mm lens, while I zoomed in to 105mm on my 24-105mm, which was still long enough to make sure the church was a decent size in the frame. I then positioned the horizon about a third of the way up the frame and used some of Drew’s neutral density filters to achieve a long exposure of 20 seconds – long enough to add strong motion blur to the waves…

1 TELEPHOTO LENS A telephoto lens might seem like an odd choice for landscapes, but the narrower field of view can be beneficial, allowing you to zoom in to find a ‘scene within a scene’. You can also zoom in precisely on the details you want to be in the frame. Photoshop’s Brush Tool is full of hidden delights, and in this video tutorial we’ll explore one of our favourite features to create an eye-catching effect. Symmetry Painting lets you paint in several places at once. There are several types of Symmetrical Painting options to experiment with, but the most enjoyable is Mandala. Often seen in Hindu and Buddhist symbolism, mandalas are geometric patterns organised around a single central point (‘mandala’ is Sanskrit for ‘circle’). The Mandala setting in Photoshop lets you create these sorts of designs in seconds. You can also choose the number of segments for your mandala design, which essentially determines how many places you can paint in at once.
