EXPOSURE MODE Ben says… My go-to shooting mode is Aperture Priority, but if I’m not happy with the exposure, I prefer to use Manual mode rather than exposure compensation. In Manual my default setting is to overexpose my images by about ⅓ of a stop, but this is entirely a creative decision. IMAGE QUALITY Ben says… I always shoot raw, but I also like to set my image quality to ‘NEF (RAW) + JPEG fine.’ (NEF is Nikon’s proprietary raw format.)This allows you to wirelessly download images from the camera via Nikon’s SnapBridge app, and then edit and share those images while you’re out in the field using a smart device. 1 PROJECTOR Projectors, like the Optima model we’re using, let you project images and videos onto any surface. When it comes to using them outdoors, the more powerful they are the greater the reach will be. As well as being a great tool for creative photography, a projector can also showcase your finished images! 2 PROJECTED IMAGE Strong shapes, geometric patterns and contrasty photos tend to work best for this. Try projecting them onto different surfaces like trees, buildings and the ground. Look for scenes that have plenty of depth, with foreground and background details, as this can make the projected image look more interesting. 3 LAPTOP You’ll need a laptop or phone to control the projected images. Drone and action camera specialist DJI promised a season of major product announcements, beginning with the Ronin 4D cinema camera with built-in gimbal, and it’s now unveiled the much anticipated DJI Action 2, an all-new 4K action camera which weighs just 56g, and which users can customise by adding interchangeable magnetically interlocking modules. Paul Pan, DJI Senior Product Line Manager said: “We stripped our action camera down to its fundamentals and rebuilt it from the ground up to create DJI Action 2. You can configure this camera for neighborhood walks, hang-gliding off a cliff, music festivals, and countless other action-packed moments.” The camera unit is just 39mm (1.54 inches) square and 22.3mm (0.88 inches) deep, and features a 1/1.7-inch CMOS sensor with a 155-degree field of view f/2.8 lens. Call of Duty is one of the most popular and longest-running video game franchises, and to promote the upcoming release of the hotly anticipated latest instalment, Call of Duty: Vanguard, publisher Activision invited two veteran war photographers to capture images inside the game. Sebastiano Tomada and Alex Potter, who have photographed conflicts in countries including Afghanistan, Iraq, and Syria, were given virtual cameras that enabled them to move around the game’s combat zones, on a specially constructed soundstage that featured reactive lighting and sound. “I was impressed by how kinetic the game was, because everything is actually happening and moving around you,” Tomada says of the experience. “This is what war looks like, this is what conflict looks like.” Click the link to watch a video of the ‘shoot’. 1 PREPARE YOUR GRAPHICS Begin by preparing the images you plan to use for your projections. Pick strong shapes and bold patterns – we made use of free downloadable images from www.pixabay.com. White shapes on a black backdrop work well. If you need to invert whites and blacks, open the image Photoshop and press Cmd/Ctrl+I. 2 SET UP A PROJECTOR Attach your projector to a strong tripod, so that you can alter the angle at will and ensure its safety; if it doesn’t have a base plate, try lashing it to the tripod with string. 2 HOURS If photography is – as is often said – painting with light, then using a projector is like working with full set of spray cans. It lets us beam colours and shapes onto any surface; typically the surface is flat and white, but a projector can be put to more creative uses as well… In this project we’ll take our projector into the great outdoors after dark to create some otherworldly photos. Inspired by the work of Spanish installation artist Javier Riera, we’ll project bold shapes and geometric patterns onto both natural and man-made forms for surreal photographic results. 1 MERGE TO HDR If you’ve shot a bracketed sequence of images, you can merge them to HDR in Camera Raw/Lightroom. Highlight the set of photographs, then right-click and choose HDR Merge. Choose a level of deghosting to correct for any movement that may have shown up between the frames, then hit OK. 2 ENHANCE THE TONES After merging to HDR, experiment with the tonal tools in the Basic panel to enhance the image. You’ll find that you have a lot more headroom for lightening or darkening areas thanks to the HDR effect. Standard zooms like a 24-70mm offer great convenience for everyday shooting, but a standard prime lens brings something extra to the table. On a full-frame camera you get an entirely natural viewing angle that equates to a lifelike perspective, while on a crop-sensor body these lenses make great short telephotos for portraiture and the like. Standard primes also typically have a faster aperture rating. Compared with, say, an f/3.5-5.6 standard zoom, an f/1.8 prime is around three f-stops faster, enabling faster shutter speeds for freezing action handheld under dull lighting, and a much tighter depth of field for blurring the background, so you can really isolate the subject.
