Viltrox has announced a new ultra-wide lens for full-frame Sony E-mount cameras. Unusually for a third-party lens from a smaller manufacturer, the Viltrox 16mm F1.8 FE is an autofocus design, incorporating a stepping motor AF system that’s also said to support face AF and eye AF. The optical stack consists of 15 elements arranged in 12 groups, including three aspherical elements for improving image sharpness, and four extra-low dispersion elements to help control ghosting and flare. A 9-blade aperture diaphragm can be controlled directly from the rear-mounted control ring on the lens barrel. With a fast f/1.8 maximum aperture, the lens looks ideal for low-light handheld shooting, and also for astrophotography. Vital Impacts, the non-profit founded by acclaimed photographer and filmmaker Ami Vitale to support conservation organisations, has announced the two winners of its Environmental Photography Grants. Musuk Nolte of Mexico and Peru, and Tailyr Irvine of the Salish and Kootenai tribes in western Montana, USA, will each receive $20,000 to document solution-based environmental initiatives in their communities. Nikon has launched its first prime lens for its DX range of mirrorless cameras. The Nikkor Z DX 24mm f/1.7 joins four zoom lenses that are designed exclusively for Nikon’s APS-C-sensor cameras - the Nikon Zfc, Z30 and Z50 - and is the last of the DX lenses promised on the current Nikon Z lens roadmap. Although many of the full-frame Z-mount lenses in Nikon’s range can be used on these DX cameras, the lack of affordable, lightweight lenses has been a significant disadvantage for users of these models. The new 24mm f/1.7 lens provides a fast wide-angle lens that weighs just 135g (4.8oz), and measures 70 x 40mm (2.8 x 1.6 inches). The beauty of dance is that it can convey so much emotion from a single pose and, when paired with a stunning setting, a photo of a dancer can become a story. Dance photography is an incredibly challenging niche. You will experience many moments when you curse yourself because of one bit of motion blur on a pointed toe or that single passerby who walked into the shot.
