1 OPEN APERTURE Try using an app that lets you adjust the exposure settings on your phone manually. Select a maximum aperture setting, such as f/2.8 or f/3.5, to enhance the depth of field effect. Compensate for the exposure via ISO. 2 ACHIEVE CONTRAST To emphasise the depth of field, try to photograph your subject against a different coloured background. Starbursts can be a wonderful addition to landscapes and night scenes. Set a narrow aperture like f/22, point your lens towards any small, bright highlight (such as the sun or a street lamp), and it can become a beautiful star shape. However, using this technique poses a dilemma. The narrow aperture results in diffraction, where light spreads out along the aperture blades, causing the pinpoints on the star – known as ‘diffraction spikes’. In this instance, diffraction is our friend – but it’s also a problem, because it results in a softening of fine detail elsewhere in the scene. So do we capture the starburst and settle for a softer scene, or prioritize image sharpness? With a bit of simple image blending, we can have the best of both worlds.…

Lighting specialist Godox has launched an updated version of its on-camera macro ring flash. The new Godox MF-R76S TTL is designed for close-up photography, where you need the even lighting that the ring-shaped lens-mounted flash tubes provide. Similar to the existing manually controlled Godox R76, the new version offers TTL metering, and wireless control when using the Godox 2.4GHz X system. The MF-R76S TTL will be available in three different versions to offer TTL compatibility with Sony, Canon and Nikon systems. The units also offer advanced flash features such as high-speed sync (HSS), and second-curtain sync. ND (neutral-density) or CPL (circular polariser) filters are popular with photographers, and they’re also available for your smartphone camera. With an ND filter it’s possible to capture bright scenes with long exposures without overexposing bright areas like skies. They’re particularly popular for landscapes and seascapes, where the movement of clouds and water can be artfully captured in long exposures. Polarising filters are also favoured for these images, as they reduce reflections and glare from water and shiny surfaces.…

In addition to its main competition, International Garden Photographer of the Year runs several standalone photo contests throughout the year, with photographers encouraged to focus on specific themes and subjects, and IGPOTY has just announced the winners of its 2023 Beautiful Blenheim competition. The contest celebrates the spectacular gardens of Blenheim Palace, a country house in Oxfordshire, UK. The 2,000-acre gardens were designed by the 18th century landscape architect Capability Brown. First prize this year went to local photographer Tom Brown for his wonderfully atmospheric image Misty Sunrise, (above, top-left), which shows the main house silhouetted against a fiery early morning sky, with the scene veiled in a light mist. Exposing a scene perfectly in challenging lighting conditions can be difficult even when you’re working with a modern DSLR or mirrorless camera. Of course, poor lighting is also one of the biggest challenges to overcome in smartphone photography, but the problems are exacerbated by the camera’s smaller sensor. That means it captures less light, which in turn affects image quality. To get the best results with a smartphone in low-light conditions, use an app such as ProShot, which offers DSLR-like exposure control to exploit the phone’s technical possibilities.
