If you needed any convincing that black-and-white photography can convey drama and atmosphere in a way that just isn’t possible with colour, the winning image in this year’s Black and White Photo Awards should do the trick.
The captivating, somewhat menacing-looking portrait of a gelada, a species of Ethiopian primate, was captured by Patrice Quillard. “For a fleeting moment, he turned towards me, locking me in his intense gaze, and I comprehended the sheer dominance he held over his troop,” Quillard recalls. “It was an unforgettable instant – a snapshot of the essence I sought to capture.”
