THE FAST SHOW Gary says… I typically shoot wide open in Manual mode with Auto ISO and use exposure compensation to control my exposure. I like to keep my shutter speed at 1/2000 sec or above, and it’s then a case of balancing the shutter speed and ISO – I’m happy with anything up to ISO10,000 on my Z 9, even ISO20,000. FOCUS SETTINGS Gary says… My go-to settings for birds in flight are wide-area AF (L) with subject-detection set to Bird. If you’re using a DSLR or an older mirrorless camera you’ll struggle to keep single-point AF locked onto the bird, so instead, opt for a cluster of AF points via the dynamic-area AF mode to improve your odds. Canon has announced its first new cameras of 2024, the Canon EOS R1 and Canon EOS R5 Mark II, a pair of powerhouse mirrorless models with an emphasis very much on speed, and which are packing new AI features. The EOS R1 is the company’s new flagship sports camera, and it’s a high-performance hybrid photo-and-video machine that’s designed to take on the Sony A9 III and Nikon Z9. It’s bristling with Canon’s latest technology, including a stacked 24.2MP full-frame sensor with a new Digic Accelerator processor, which works alongside the existing Digic X processor to help the camera hit 40fps burst-shooting speeds with the electronic shutter, with full autofocus tracking. There’s also AI-powered upscaling that can produce 96MP images in-camera, along with 6K 60p video, new predictive autofocus modes, and…

LENSES Gary says… The lens you use will depend on the distance of the birds, and 400mm is ideal at Horn Mill, so Leigh borrowed my Nikon Z 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 VR S. A fast prime will give you better image quality, but the flexibility of a zoom will reduce your chances of missing the shot; you may only have one or two chances, after all. For starters, you can zoom out so you don’t end up tracking a bird with such a tight frame that you lose it. Secondly, weight is very important. The ospreys dive at such a steep angle that it’s impossible to track an entire run while resting the lens on a beanbag or using a gimbal. And a 400mm zoom is much more comfortable to handhold…

While Photoshop has offered video tools for several years, many users don’t know they exist – and those who do may assume that Photoshop is unsuited to editing video. But not only is it possible to edit your video clips in Photoshop, it can be a simple and effective tool for working with moving images. As you’ll discover in this issue’s video tutorial, the great thing about using Photoshop to edit video is that you can take lots of the things you already know about stills editing, and apply them to video. You can use brilliant tools like the Camera Raw filter to tone your footage, and even add layer effects, like blending modes, to combine videos in creative ways. www.sony.co.uk £1,249/$1,200 Everybody loves ‘trinity’ wide-angle, standard and telephoto f/2.8 zoom lenses, right? Actually, you can count me out. Especially for use on mirrorless cameras, I prefer ‘slower’ f/4 zooms that are smaller, more lightweight and better balanced for relatively slimline bodies. When I feel the need for speed, I switch to a prime lens. Following in the footsteps of the Sony FE 24-50mm F2.8 G standard zoom, the 16-25mm offers a fairly fast f/2.8 aperture throughout its zoom range in a relatively small and lightweight build. Something has to give, naturally, and, as on the 24-50mm, the zoom range is more restrictive than that of a typical ‘trinity’ optic.
