UNLIKE MORE TRADITIONAL manufacturers, Vango doesn’t make a poled awning, having decided to put all of its eggs into the increasingly popular inflatable basket with its ‘AirBeam’ technology. It’s a more expensive construction (at least for now), but its benefits are clear: lighter, smaller packaging; excellent storm resistance; fast pitch and put-away times; and less potential to damage your van in high winds. The Varkala comes in three sizes, from a weekender porch awning to this 420, the largest (and best-selling) in the range. OUR PREVIOUS ENCOUNTER with Nissan’s Pathfinder was five years ago, about the same time the manufacturer facelifted and improved what we already had earmarked as a top tow car. In fact, we concluded: ‘The Pathfinder achieves exactly what it set out to do, which was offer a cheaper, more reliable alternative to the Land Rover Discovery.’ So now seems like a good time for a retrospective look at Nissan’s 2010 changes and to see whether this fairly old model still makes sense. The Pathfinder’s basics haven’t changed: this is a rugged four-wheel-drive seven-seater, still based – unusually – on a separate ladder-frame chassis. AMONG THE ROWS and rows of caravans pitched at this year’s Reader Rally at Stowford Farm Meadows in Devon, my colleagues and I spotted one very interesting-looking van. With a lightning bolt painted across its front, this tourer was definitely unique. I just had to have a peek inside and hung around chatting to the neighbours, friends of Tracey and Chris Greenep who own the van, until they returned from a trip to Stowford Farm’s shop. This is unmistakably a project of love that, with plenty of modifications along the way, has already gone through quite a transformation and continues to evolve as it is used. When you visit Bath today, you see a thriving Regency city. But when the healing powers of the world-famous spring waters were first discovered in 863BC, by Prince Bladud, who claimed that it cured his leprosy, it was a very different place. It wasn’t healing that I needed when colleague Clare and I headed to Bath with our Adria Altea Forth earlier this year, but a little rest and relaxation. With the Thermae Bath Spa at its heart, the city is perfect for a pampering break, plus, of course, great shopping, eating and sightseeing. Bath Marina and Caravan Park is to the west of the city centre and alongside the River Avon. It is just two miles from the main shopping and sightseeing areas, and takes only 40 minutes to walk along the tow path, or you can catch the park-and-ride bus from across the road. Taking your car into the centre is fairly easy, with plenty of parking available. BARBECUES ARE MORE or less de rigueur on warm summer tours, but it’s almost impossible to mention the ‘B’ word without triggering a debate about which is better: gas or charcoal. The aficionado’s argument is pretty sound: charcoal as a heat source gives food a unique flavour that gas units simply don’t, and units capable of burning charcoal are as at home with any wood. Using hickory or apple/pear wood can add subtle flavours to pork and beef, for example. But gas barbecues are certainly practical – there’s no ash to clean up, no black art to getting the thing alight in the first place, and the convenience of being able to cook within minutes of igniting the flame. It has been offered for the past 15 years The provision of a rear washroom, toilet, shower and dressing room is a key feature in this 2005 Avondale Argente. To take up minimal space, many caravans built in the 1990s adopted a system in which a fold-up washbasin was mounted directly above the toilet. Some found the arrangement clumsy Manufacturers later increased the size of their toilet/washrooms. So, even early bench-style fixed cassette toilets were easier to use if the washbasins were fitted elsewhere In the late 1990s, Thetford introduced swivel-bowl toilets and, while cassette capacity was slightly reduced, the unit gave versatility in tight spaces, as in this 2006 Bailey Pageant Repairing faulty components inside toilet cassettes was very difficult so two new versions featured a large access port and distinctive colours. RAILEY CARAVANS As ever, the UK’s sole southern volume caravan manufacturer has avoided the wholesale range changes of its rivals, and has chosen to dedicate all of its resources on one major model overhaul. This efficient wall-mounted space heater made by Carver is fitted in a 1996 van. Unfortunately, this UK company ceased producing heaters in 1999, but there are still specialist repairers Truma, a German manufacturer that worked with Carver, produces similar wall-mounted units and other heaters. Dealers can fit one of these if a Carver product is beyond repair The compact, well-insulated Carver Cascade water heater can still be repaired — or replaced by a replica product called the Henry GE. THE BESSACARR BADGE has been around for more than 60 years and, although it has passed through many managerial hands, it has always been known for the luxurious tourers that wear it. The 2007 Cameo range was no exception. It had been fully revamped in 2005, so the only change two years later was updated soft furnishings. A smooth GRP panel defined its characteristic profile, and one-piece, high-impact aluminium clad the sides. A grabhandle stretched nearly right across the GRP rear panel.
