If a shoulder bag adds more than five pounds or a tote more than 10, try to lighten up. “Carry only what you need in at most a 12-hour day,” says Carol Frey, M.D., codirector of the West Coast Sports Medicine Foundation/UCLA Sports Medicine Fellowship. Carrying a too-heavy bag can strain your muscles and throw your posture out of alignment, leading to neck, shoulder, back, and foot pain. If you need to schlep lots of stuff, opt for a wheeled bag.
