DEAR READER Bureaucrats and politics. No, I'm not talking about the continuing actions (or should that be inaction) of the Labour-led government in the UK, but the bizarre events that occurred on the profi stand at LAMMA 25. Just like last year, we had a tractor on the stand as a way of highlighting what we're about, because, even with the friendliest of smiles, not everyone stops to chat if there’s only an array of magazines and other profi merch on display. Our lure for this year was another John Deere, a brand spanker 6M125, which coincidentally is also an important member of the new 6M family that appeared on the cover of and inside our February issue — the very magazine that took centre stage on our LAMMA show…

USARYA STONEPICKER Polish firm Usarya reports that more and more of its machines are being used by potato growers as a higher speed alternative to conventional de-stoners. Available in 5.0m and 7.0m working widths, the company’s machines employ pairs of rotors working down to 20cm depth to flick out stones and draw them to a central conveyor. Key advantage of having twin rotors is said to be that because of the increased agitation effect the units can work in wetter conditions than might normally be possible. From the conveyor the stones pass on to a Trommel-type barrel screen which generates a tumbling effect to separate any remaining soil. From here the rocks drop into a 3.0m3 high-tip hopper which can discharge into trailers up to 3.5m high. Material between 25mm…

This monstrous crop transfer truck was on display from Richard Larrington. Based on a Dennis dustcart, the self-propelled elevator has been designed for maize growers A chain and slat conveyor propels material skywards up and over the machine’s cab from where it drops onto a pivoting flap that sends it to the waiting truck or trailer. Hydraulic out-rigger jack legs keep it stable when it’s in position for work. One of the advantages is that it keeps the trailers hauling off the forager in the in the field eliminating the issue of mud on the road. It also means the tyres on those trailers can be run at ultra-low pressures to limit soil compaction. When it comes to pulling a heavy load, it’s important to know how much of the crankshaft power will actually arrive at the wheels. After all, it is this power that makes a difference when it comes to ploughing or cultivating. At the same time, the tested specific diesel consumption in grams per kilowatt hour of drawbar power (g/kWh) is a decent and reliable indicator of the efficiency of the overall system, consisting of the engine, transmission, axles, etc. This specifies how many litres (or grammes) of diesel have to be burned to achieve a certain amount of (draft) work. Grimme’s latest potato planter is the multi-pronged Prios, bringing with it new features such as the optional swan neck drawbar, the universal or hybrid ridging bodies and, for the first time, section control for all components. On the Prios Pro — that’s the model with the swan neck drawbar — hitching up is made much easier when the cultivator is removed. This gives the user more room to connect the headstock to the tractor’s rear linkage (Cat. III/IV) as well as the Power Beyond connections and a double-acting spool for the linkage on the planter. Sicma, based in Miglianico, Italy, is one of the largest makers of mounted rotary cultivators. In fact, tractor-it markets about 32 different model ranges and versions in addition to covering the whole range of other cultivators. It not only builds the units, but also manufactures a good chunk of the components including driveshafts, gearboxes and cast elements. Pivoting gauge wheels The model we look at here is the firm’s RK Bio — a powered tiller for shallow operations. Starting at the headstock, it has Cat III couplers that can be set to fixed or movable, depending on whether the tractor’s lower links allow the machine to adapt to the ground contours. Guided by two pairs of wide, pivoting double gauge wheels, the machine’s working depth is set on lubricated cranks…

The Venterra hoes have also undergone various refinements. A new standard feature is a quick-release system for the tines, which enables quick changes without tools. This seems to be up to the job after the previous bolt-on Rapido system didn’t establish itself. The tine plate is simply pushed onto the leg with tools and then secured with a spring. We would appreciate it if the spring was protected against working loose from the lasered part. Handling the system was fine. It may just take a blow with the hammer to remove soil from the tine. The holder is designed for duckfoot points of between 140mm and 280mm. Further widths will follow. A bit of a spoiler from the outset. Köckerling Ultima drills will not be the easiest of used finds in the UK or Ireland for that matter. So why cover them? Simple. These drills are decent sellers on the continent, especially in the their German homeland, their ability to sow at an even sowing depths at higher speeds making them a popular design. They are versatile too as they can work from ploughed ground and min-til right through to direct into stubble. Amazone promises a saving of up to 25% in fertiliser by spot placement when planting, and a zero negative impact on the overall maize yield. And even though it uses different mechanics to achieve the same goal, Kverneland also promises similar savings with its Pudama system. Instead of employing pneumatically operated brush funnels, Amazone relies on rotating portioning arms that are powered electrically. The optional Fertispot components can be retrofitted to existing machines, provided they already have the following elements in place: holders for the portioning arms on the fertiliser coulter; (they're standard fit from year 2024), the professional wiring harness and the top-end job computer, which as it happens will become a standard-fit item on machines this season. A one-owner classic is always very interesting to hear about, even if that classic is not one of the ‘big names’ such as MB trac, Ford, John Deere or even a Deutz-Fahr. In the case of the pictured Zetor ZTS 16245 model, the first owner goes by the name of Alexander Eberhardt — well almost, because it was his father who actually bought the tractor fresh out of the box back in 1994. Started at 6pm on Saturday 21 December at The Strade, Hastings (This is part of Hastings old town by the traditional fisherman’s market). The revised exterior styling is not the only update to the Rostselmash 1370 because the 366hp Cummins engine in the previous 1000 series flagship has been swapped for a 9.0l Russian made Kamaz six-pot 371hp Stage IIIa block. Mated to the same 16fx9r automatic powershift as the previous 2020-launched model, the top speed is 40km/hr. The Russian manufacturer reckons that the revised 4.3m³ cab is one of the largest on the market. The front axle is suspended. With adjustable track width, the tractor can be shod with tyres from 270 to 710mm wide, allowing it to be used in row crops. LOWEST UK TRACTOR MARKET SINCE 1998 With just 10,241 new tractors registered, the UK tractor market was the lowest for 26 years in 2024. Down 13% on the numbers in 2023, last year’s total could have been even lower was it not for an uptick in the final month of the year. For the first and only time all year, the number of agricultural tractors (over 50hp) registered in December was higher than in the same month the year before. At 791 machines, the monthly total was 14% higher than in December 2023 and was also 5.0% above the average for the time of year over the previous five years. Aside from being used for weed control, GST’s Biostar roller hoe has a couple of other tricks up its sleeve. Equipped with the company’s own 400-litre seeder unit or front-tank, the machine can be used to sow cover-crops or apply starter fertiliser to emerging crops. Simple slot-in latches make it possible to lift individual star-wheels out of work so that the Biostar can be put to work in row crops such as maize or Christmas trees. According to famer and inventor Jacob Gubi, one of the hoe’s most valuable roles is in breaking up surface capping shortly after drilling. While this helps to let delicate emerging seedlings get away it also provides an essential flush of mineralised nitrogen – estimated to be worth 5-10kg/N/ha from each pass. GST’s unusual twin-beam…

Another new name to LAMMA, BeTec was showing off its range of slurry application kit, shear-grabs, clamp compactors and baleun-rollers. The Slovenian company has a vast array of boom applicators including dribble-bars, trailing shoes and disc injectors that span 4.0m to 36m and are fitted with its own in-house-built macerator/chopper units. It also has a novel hybrid set-up that combines the benefits of an injector with those of a trailing shoe. Called the Hyber-Disc, it employs a plain disc to cut a slot ahead of a flexible outlet that runs just above the soil surface but skims under the grass sward. According to BeTec this design allows high application rates and matches the output of a conventional trailing shoe without the need for additional horsepower. Maintenance requirements are said to…

McConnel had a prototype quick-release trimmer flail on show. Intended to reduce the amount of time it takes sharpen or change metal; the new design incorporates the existing recessed hex-head that’s already standard on the firm’s machines but employs a spring-loaded retaining pin to hold the flail ‘bolt’ in place. We’re told releasing it just takes a gentle tap from a punch. Having undertaken over 2,000 hours of testing with the new design. It’s hoped the new quick-fit flail heads will be on offer within the next year with a minimal premium to pay for this maintenance-friendly option. Which drill is best at distributing fertiliser evenly between the crop rows? Which is the nicest machine to use and who offers worthwhile features? Horsch has been marketing the semi-mounted Joker RT line for about 16 years, with a revamp back in 2019 bringing a number of modifications. One of these mods refers to the hydraulic cushioning for the running gear, which is now available after the rear roller. The disc legs were also part of the freshen-up, helping to improve the amount of clearance for soil and trash to flow through the machine. The Joker 6 RT we had on test has a working width of more than 6.0m, which puts it bang in the middle ground of the range. Other widths are 5.0m, 7.0m, 8.0m, 10m and 12m. Lemken has had an integrated press for its Juwel and Titan ploughs since back in 2012. The only problem was that it could only be used with the shear bolt protected version due to how it was coupled to the plough. However, that all changes with the latest press incarnation, which has been designed to work with the firm’s hydraulic Optistone auto reset system. The design This new Flexpack still has a box section beam that runs parallel to the plough beam. Thanks to a movable parallelogram, if the furrow width is altered, the press alters its working width. The operator can also move the press hydraulically forwards or back, allowing the outfit, for instance, to work up to about 30cm of the field edge. Depending on the desired firming…

As well as power harrows, rotary cultivators and mulchers, Italian firm Valentini also manufactures stone crushers, stump grinders and forestry mulchers — basically, machines that need to be robust and have a high-speed spinning rotor that will simply shake off an encounter with a stone or stump. Powerful gearbox On the Strip Maxi Squalo 5700 strip-till cultivator (and the narrower models in the range), the gearboxes are designed for up to 240kW/330hp. Valentini’s side-mounted gearboxes have four gears taking power from the central gearbox, a design that helps to control the oil temperature under load, says the manufacturer. More than 90% of the rollers, cultivators and packers made by Dalbo end up in the three main export markets of the UK, Germany and France. The Danish manufacturer has a long history in the number one export market of the UK where many arable and livestock farms use some form of Dalbo roller or know someone who does. The Dal in Dalbo means valley in Danish and bo is a house. A house at the top of a valley is a good way to describe the Randbøl location. Surrounded by a mix of forests and farmland, the river at the valley bottom is close to the end of its journey at the Danish town of Vejle. Operating mainly in Nottinghamshire and Lincolnshire, J P Plowright & Son is a sugar beet specialist. Based at Barnstone, near Langar, once the last of the 2,430ha or so have been lifted, the focus switches to spring drilling 1,200-1,400ha for next season. The contractor reckons to have been one of the first to offer a sugar beet harvesting service in 1948, taking delivery of its first six-row harvester, one of the first French-made six-row Moreau harvesters in the UK, in 1974. Organising an MB trac gathering at a motorcycle speedway circuit was a bit of a gamble, the club grounds of MSC Dohren in north west Germany hardly being the most likely spot for a tractor meet. The initial was to organise a private event with just 50 or so people. What was not expected was the level of interest the event would generate, the planning team of twelve realising early on they would need to make some big changes as the number of attendees quickly rose to over 200. Luckily a large local campsite would enable participants to camp nearby, so it was all systems go. Many were also FFA members, and there were more dressed up Father Christmas’ than I have ever seen in one place before. Tea and biscuits set things up and everyone was in a jovial festive mood for the day ahead. Before they left the farm complex some £465 had been collected as they headed towards Green Lane, Wrotham on to St Clare’s and The Bell Inn where they stopped for a break. Zoomlion has developed three hybrid tractors; the DV3504 (350hp), DV3804 (380hp) and DV4004 (400hp). The diesel block in the Chinese manufacturer’s new flagship range is mated to what the company calls an intelligent MIDD (Meshed Intelligent Direct Drive) hybrid system. How it works is still under wraps, but there is a faint hint it provides an electric power boost and fuel consumption is said to be around 8.0% lower. All we know for sure is that the techniques provides stepless speed up to 40km/hr. A built-in navigation system is standard inside the pressurised cab, and a 360-degree camera system provides the driver with unobstructed visibility around the trio of 14t tractors. Best known for its heavy drum grassland aerators, AerWorx had a direct drill on display. Tagged the ‘Viper’, the Turkish built box-drill employs 21 double-disc openers to work straight into grassland or stubbles at 12.5cm row spacings. With both spring and hydraulic downforce adjustment we’re told it’s possible to generate up to 90kg of pressure per coulter. Consolidation and depth control is provided by individual rubber press wheels. Being a box-drill, gearbox rate control is simple while large and small seed fluted rollers apparently cater from everything from the smallest clovers right up to beans. The 1,000-litre hopper has pivoting baffles making it possible vary the split between grain and fertiliser or different varieties of seed. Our first impression of the Kioti HX1402 remains positive. The five-pillar cab feels roomy, with good all-round visibility. Overall ergonomics are none too shabby either, the seat armrest having just four controls; a rocker shift to toggle through the eight speeds per range, hand throttle, linkage raise/lower and depth control. There is a further button tucked down on the inside of the armrest to select auto shift, with the rear of the two divided armrest lids flipping up for access to linkage setting controls underneath. No clutter, with good spacing between everything to make hitting the right control without looking as easy as you will find on a modern tractor. Shortly before the Amazone takeover in 2019, Schmotzer had presented the Okio camera system, which was intended to advance its automatic row-finding technology in collaboration with an external supplier. But the partnership never really got into its stride, so Amazone then switched to its current arrangement of predominantly going with the fourth-generation Culticam cameras from Claas E-Systems. Even though Amazone now has its own in-house SmartVision system, the company will continue to have the Culticam in its range. With SmartVision, the machine manufacturer now wants better integration and to be more in control of the features and functions such as the all-important side-shift control, slope compensation and how the operator interface is laid out. At the last Agritechnica show, 4Disc presented the ActiCut — an ultra-shallow cultivator with a difference. We took a closer look at the novel design that utilises horizontally powered rotating discs, which aim to move all the soil at an ultra-shallow depth while also slicing through plant roots. The model shown here is the ActiCut 450, which we tucked into a field of grass stubble. Lightweight construction There are various models of the ActiCut, all of which mount to Cat. III lift arms. All are deliberately designed to be light in weight, with the 4.50m model weighing in at just under 2.5t. This lightweight design is possible thanks the Dynamic Traction Control (DTC) system that shifts tractor weight onto the cultivator by pressing against the underside of the tractor’s lower…

Measuring the ground pressure in field conditions is both costly and time-consuming. Thankfully, there are simulation programs that can recreate the amount of compaction relative to the tyres fitted and the load being carried by the wheel. However, it takes a lot of work, with countless measurements, to develop such a program. Complex experiments… The Bern University of Applied Sciences was able to use a 1.0m by 1.0m sensor mat with an incredible 37,000 measuring points. For the tests, the mat was placed directly under the tyre (VF600/70 R30), which was inflated to 1.6 bar and loaded with 4.6t. More than 200 years ago, farm machinery was already being mass-produced in the Hohenheim agricultural equipment factory, which was part of the teaching and research institute. In 1819 in southern Germany, this was a unique approach and clearly laid the foundations for the world’s oldest collection of farm machinery. The history of the museum Countless exhibits in the museum served as training and demonstration machines in the early days of mechanisation, whereas others served their time in the field. The actual museum was founded in the 1970s. The main promotor was its director Dr Klaus Herrmann who passed away in 2022. In 1994, the first extension was built at a new site at Filderhauptstraße 179, outside the university campus. This building, too, was quickly outgrown. It was one particular exhibit…

Jeremy Riley setup J Riley Beet Harvesters (UK) at Attlebridge in early 1995. In the first year it sold eight 17-T harvesters, but the numbers soon increased to 40 a year. The first two nine-row Beet Eater harvesters in the UK were sold in 2002, with a total of eight making the trip across the water over the next five years. But the introduction of a six-row version in 2005, which became known as the Beet Eater 625 in 2007, offered almost the same cleaning capacity as the nine-row machine whilst retaining the popular six-row format and became the more popular option. At Arnborg, 15km south of Herning, Henning Thybo crops 900ha, 320ha of which is potatoes, 70ha grass seed and the remainder malting barley; he is also vice chairman of the AKD Danmark potato starch factory and board member of KMC, a potato-based food ingredient co-operative. “My father was a dairy farmer, but I worked outside the industry until 1986, farming land that I’d purchased at Baektoft in my spare time. The opportunity came to buy more land and in 1996 I became a full-time farmer.” Joining the board of the KMC co-operative, he saw the opportunity to specialise in the production of potato starch, the sandy soils and emerging processing facilities in the Herning area favouring this line of business.
