Fifteen years after their last performance with Porcupine Tree, bassist Colin Edwin and former touring guitarist John Wesley are set to revisit the band’s early material under the name Colin Edwin & John Wesley’s Voyage 35. And, as part of those plans, the duo have announced live dates for 2026, including three shows in Holland between September 10 and 12 and an appearance at Italy’s 2Days Prog + 1 Festival, with UK dates also in the works. With their heavy blues-rock, psychedelic leanings and eerie digressions, Atomic Rooster were an important influence on British progressive rock in the early 1970s. Refined veterans return with easygoing epic. It’s 55 years since the Barclay James Harvest debut album and 12 since their most recent, North. That sailed under the flag of John Lees’ Barclay James Harvest, which since 1998 has signified the true carrier of the torch. Lees retired from touring two years ago, but now his quartet prove they’ve plenty left in the tank as Relativity goes big on concepts, scale and length. Its self-produced, sophisticated 78 minutes glide confidently through the gentle, unhurried brand of progressive rock which made the BJH name. There is zero attempt to update their sound: the priorities are carefully crafted songs of piquant melody and soothing, sonorous guitar manoeuvres. Surprisingly powerful sixth album from charismatic folk proggers. Since forming in 2008, pagan folk rock band Spriggan Mist’s line-up has gradually evolved around the husband-and-wife team of Baz and Maxine Cilia (bass and various instruments respectively). A classic album held in high esteem for its ambition, vision and adventurous use of then-contemporary recording technology, 1977’s I Robot was the second release from the Alan Parsons Project. Planned as a concept album based on the robot stories of Isaac Asimov, it became more broadly about issues arising from humanity’s use and development of intelligent machines when legal restrictions prohibited the use of Asimov’s name and story titles. Peter Hammill, the frontman of Van der Graaf Generator and one of prog’s most original voices, is the subject of a new biography. Rock And Role: The Visionary Songs Of Peter Hammill And Van der Graaf Generator, written by author and Prog writer Joe Banks, is out on November 21 via Kingfisher Publishing. Banks, whose acclaimed Days Of the Underground explored the world of Hawkwind, turns his attention to Hammill with a deep-dive unauthorised biography. “There’s never been a proper English-language biography of Peter before, which is faintly extraordinary,” Banks says. “He’s one of our greatest lyricists, and his music opens up broader cultural and philosophical themes. Swindon’s working-class Rick Davies and Portsmouth’s public schoolboy Roger Hodgson were not, on paper, an ideal match – ‘There’s you, and there’s me’ – yet it was the yin and yang chemistry of their writing that defined Supertramp at their most potent. When inspiration struck as Rick Wakeman was composing his new album of piano instrumentals, the venerable maestro of the ivories had a reliable way to indicate whether or not he was onto something. Derek Shulman’s new autobiography, Giant Steps: My Improbable Journey From Stage Lights To Executive Heights, details his life as a musician and then his career as a successful record company executive. Long-awaited lysergic final album from the maverick masterminds. Consider the emotions going through the tousled noggin of Kavus Torabi. Seventeen years ago the guitarist was co-navigator of the sixth album by his favourite act, Cardiacs, alongside maverick guitar-songwriter-frontman polymath Tim Smith, his inspiration, bandmate and friend. The album was to be called LSD – Torabi’s suggestion, referencing the pair’s affection for it – but Smith became paralysed and unable to speak after a stroke in 2008, so Cardiacs immobilised also. Smith died suddenly in 2020, and it seemed unlikely that LSD would surface. But in 2018, Craig Fortnam and Torabi had found a way to restart work on the album, gathering feedback from Smith at every stage. Riverside frontman closes the circle with his cinematic solo project. Mariusz Duda might be better known as the vocalist, bassist and sometime guitarist with Riverside, but his solo endeavour Lunatic Soul has co-existed alongside for 17 years now. Even an outfit with tendencies as progressive as Riverside are fettered to some degree by the traditional band format, whereas Lunatic Soul provides Duda with a sense of freedom, allowing the multi-instrumentalist to explore other musical paths. “Almost as sprawling musically as it is thematically.” With Riverside having put their last album, 2023’s ID.Entity, to bed and announced a temporary break from touring, this is the perfect time for Duda to bring back his alter ego. A retrospective colossus from prog’s eternal outlier. All-encompassing and assuredly eccentric, Peter Hammill’s solo catalogue is almost too vast to be contained. This expansive and comprehensive box set does a pretty fine job of tackling at least part of it, featuring every record he made as a solo artist between 1971’s Fool’s Mate and 1986’s Virgin Records swansong And Close As This, with a huge amount of bonus material, BBC sessions, freshly remixed versions of two pointedly revolutionary classics, and a gorgeous, 78-page hardback book. “Progressive as hell, of course, but also utterly unique.” While we quietly marvel at how overwhelming this 183-song extravaganza would seem to the uninitiated, this capturing of Hammill’s fascinating musical story unfolds like a sustained series of genre-less revelations and smartly crafted curveballs. Australian prog heavyweights Karnivool release their long-anticipated fourth studio album, In Verses, on February 6 via Cymatic Records/Sony Music – it’s 13 years since their ARIA-winning Asymmetry. The band have shared a new single, Aozora, which, according to vocalist Ian Kenny, explores the themes of escape and finding freedom“amongst the complications of just being human.” Produced by compatriot Forrester Savell, the album is described by the band as being“a culmination of the last decade that have brought Karnivool to this point. Sweden-based prog metallers Soen return with Reliance, their seventh studio album, set for release on January 16 via Silver Lining Music. Led by vocalist Joel Ekelöf and drummer Martin Lopez, Soen promise to probe the depths of the human condition. Since the late 90s they’ve cultivated progressive vignettes with the imagery and transportive powers of twisted fairy tales, even as they face profoundly human questions. King Crimson’s second and third LPs, both originally released in 1970, have arguably been undervalued and misunderstood ever since they first came out. In The Wake Of Poseidon was an early example of (very) difficult second album syndrome, given both the epochal impact of KC’s debut and the subsequent collapse of the band.
