OH, BABY! It happens to all of us. That baby shower sneaks up before you know it or the baby comes early—either way, baby quilt patterns are a necessity for quilters. Luckily, they are usually quick and easy—and a natural fit for this publication. This issue features six different baby quilt patterns for your baby quilt arsenal. In fact, don’t even attempt to cut your borders until you’re completely done with your quilt top, and you’ve pressed it neatly and it’s not waving at you either. 2 Measure your quilt top. Yes, I know your ¼" is to perfection, and would never dream of suggesting that your quilt top is larger or smaller than the pattern says. Still. Humor me, and measure it, right down the center, and about 4-6" on either side of that. That’s the size your quilt is; at or near the center, not out at the edges. Woodland Wonderland “The embroidery design used for the quilt reminds me of an English children’s book called ‘Winky Lost in the Deep Deep Woods’—which I loved as a child—and was the perfect choice to coordinate with the beautiful pastels in the fabric. 1. Trace appliqué template onto heat-resistant template plastic. Cut template out and smooth any bumps with an emery board. 2. Trace appliqué shape onto wrong side of fabric using template. Cut fabric ¼" outside drawn line. Clip curves and points as needed. 3. With template on wrong side of fabric, apply starch to seam allowance and press toward back of template. 4. Continue starching and pressing until all necessary edges are turned under. Remove template. 5. Place appliqué shapes onto background fabric, layering as needed. Baste using pins or fabric glue. 6. finished size: 50" × 60" finished blocks: 30 (10") BLOCKS Inspired by the promise that each spring brings, this quilt reminds me of a spring flower bouquet. The way the block comes together, it looks like each flower is surrounded by a bow. Using Moda Speckled and Bella solids provides the right amount of contrast between the light and dark of each color, so the flowers seem to pop off the quilt. I would consider using any fabric that reads as a solid for this quilt. Shopping your stash first could save time and money. This quilt was made with her in mind, to honor her home. To add to the sentiment of a quilt being a vehicle of love from the maker, I added hearts periodically in the free motion quilting—and quilted her name into it, too. When choosing fabrics for this quilt, my suggestion is to keep it to two main colors (in my version, pink and teal). Easy Breezy Borders Borders are the perfect way to frame your gorgeous quilt top. But borders that are too long or too short can create problems. Follow the expert advice from these quilters and say “bye-bye” to difficult and wavy borders! 2½" x 92 5/8", 2½" x 87 7/8", 4½" x 100 1/8"… When faced with dimensions like these, my mind glazes over quickly, so I devised a system for cutting border strips which makes numbers like these unnecessary. It was an effort to find a safe haven in my sewing room, and of course, make use of my stash! The fabric was a beautiful small floral print, and I was able to find coordinates online. One of the flaws I quickly uncovered in my stash-busting efforts is that I sometimes needed as much additional fabric to complete a quilt as I took from my stash. I worked from home, and one day I needed about 30 minutes to finish an article I was writing. My daughter was bored and said she wanted to learn to sew.
