It’s back again! Our 11th annual Pontefract Single Channel and Retro event will be hosted by the PANDAS club on Sunday 16th July. As before there’s also an electric only fly-in (any model type) on Saturday the 15th. Since 2010 our small band of S/C and Retro enthusiasts has grown and grown and now we have a multitude of like-minded friends across the world. In fact, several of our Australian retro fans are looking into the possibility of running a parallel antipodean event this July. The ASW 28 powered glider from Volantex comes with EPO foam wings, tailplane and fin/rudder assembly. The fuselage is a nice blow moulded plastic item complete with a pilot and canopy. The review model came as a plug and play version, so it was factory fitted with six 9-gram servos for ailerons, flaps, rudder and elevator, as well as a brushless 850kV motor and a 30A ESC. A box containing all the required clevises, pushrods, control horns, screws, propeller and spinner is also included, together with a scale pilot on a moulded tray and a separate clear canopy. DANGLING DOUGHNUT Seen earlier in Dave Goodenough’s report from last October’s Ashbourne scale event, Ian Redshaw’s 1/3rd scale Sopwith Pup, greatly modified from the Balsa USA kit, is powered by a geared Zenoah 38. The gearbox allows the large prop to work very efficiently but that doesn’t help when the model skips around on landing. Shedding a tyre in a cheek clenching arrival, the Pup hauled away for another circuit before alighting oh-so gently (inset) on its wounded wheel. A bit of fixing saw it cavort again. It will probably come as no surprise that NG in the moniker of the full-size version of this stylish aerobatic aircraft from Extra Aerobatic Planes stands for Next Generation. The 8.3 metre wingspan aircraft features carbon fibre wing assemblies, a two-seat carbon monocoque fuselage and is powered by a 315hp Lycoming six-cylinder engine. It is rated at +10/-10g during aerobatics. In 1970, when Dennis Bryant’s Condor was first entered in scale competitions, no doubt it must have caused quite a stir with its over seven feet wingspan and powered by a .60 two stroke. At the time the maximum weight for a scale model was 11 lbs or about 5 kg ready to fly but without fuel. It was no mean feat to achieve this with such a large model, but Dennis managed it by keeping the structure as light as was sensible. Further weight was saved, for instance, by replacing the lower rear part of the fuselage sheeting with tissue. You’ve gone to prepare your model for another session at the patch, whether IC powered or electrocuted, set up the charger and found that the model’s battery is dead - utterly and irrevocably so. Why, you ask yourself. Well, it’s obvious really. You left the model power switched on/plugged in and the battery has bled its electrons through the receiver/ESC to the point where recovery is impossible. So, what to do? A BEACON OF HOPE Ok, you’ve murdered the battery. Get over the loss and replace said repository of power with a new one as NiMH, LiPo and similar batteries are ruined by total discharge to zero volts. May Each year, plague, pestilence and weather allowing, the Derby Radio Control Flyers have their annual scale fly-in, the late-season jamboree that brings in pilots and models for a bit of a frolic on the Ashbourne airfield patch. As last year the weather was looking soggy as I drove over the ‘landscape lumps’ to their site, in conditions our Scots brethren describe as ‘dreich’.
