Jelena Telecki doesn’t intentionally draw from the past, however fragments of it inevitably find their way into her work. A painter who left her homeland during a period of substantial unrest, she draws broadly on themes of power, representation and human interaction. Telecki’s paintings and sculptures are raw, intuitive, uncensored – like the artist herself. Telecki left her homeland during the Yugoslav wars, a series of conflicts for independence fought in the former Yugoslavia from 1991 to 2001. She’s previously expressed a sense of having been trapped there, leading to an ongoing interest in social theory and power dynamics.
