Welcome to the April issue and with the current situation in Ukraine overshadowing everything, getting afloat to is a great way to spend a few hours away from the grim news…although we always remember that there are millions of Ukrainians who don’t have that luxury. Anyone plugged in to the fishing grapevine over the years will probably have heard about the incredible sport that can be found at this unique place. Tales of huge schools of yellowfin tuna, amber-jacks, wahoo, dorado, sailfish, marlin, snapper and more. It looked challenging and a lot of fun. Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authorities are the key player in the management of our inshore fisheries out ti six miles. Many people don’t actually understand what they do, how they are constituted, who runs them and how they are funded. They are becoming increasingly important to anglers, and in particular boat anglers, as more and more of our waters are designated as Marine Protected Areas, our fish stocks come under greater pressure and commercial fishing industry fights for its future. Last month’s feature caught me in a reflective mood about the angling scene and how it has changed in forty years of angling and over twenty years of writing about it. Putting that piece together made me also realise how significant some of the tackle developments during that time have proven to be. Sussex Easttbourne It’s always nice to see new skippers coming into the business of charter boating and this year we have a new one in Eastbourne. Simon Logan, a Geordie who has settled in the south, has acquired Deep Blue a boat which had been a charter vessel in the port for a number of years up until 2019 and was also known as Misty Blue for a while. ANALYSIS The Angling Trust has been working hard for many years on behalf of sea anglers, something that’s not always appreciated by a lot of sea anglers. I’ve been personally involved for 12 years, the last 7 plus as a Director, and I often get asked exactly what is the Angling Trust doing about this or that issue – and as regular readers will know we’ve been spinning a lot of plates over the last few years-years. Bass regulations, inshore netting by laws, bluefin tuna and the CHART programme, the Fisheries Act, HPMA’s, MZC’s, porbeagle sharks, bait collection by laws, on going communication with, access issues (like the Dover Pier), the list goes on. It was a long and tiring journey involving two flights, a stay on the coast then a three-hour boat ride to our destination, the beautiful Orango Island where the four of us on the trip were hoping to fill up on some monster fish. The trip had been organised by Richard and Kelly at World Sport Fishing and they did a great job for us. We had some super fishing over the next few days, mainly decent reef fish such as cassava, barracuda, jacks, sting ray and guitar shark although we did get amongst a few biggies with nurse sharks to 260lbs on one of our days. Sussex born, Sussex bred, Strong in the arm and strong in the head is a well known saying in the south east of England. Whether true or not I’m sure is open to discussion. I spent my youth in the county and after working away returned in 1986 until 1992. It was during these years that I first fished out of Brighton Marina aboard a mono-hulled boat whose name escapes me but was skippered by a character named Brian. The fee for the day was £15 and fishing was ground fishing up to 12 miles offshore with the target species being mainly cod, whiting and black bream. Yamaha have just introduced a bunch of “new” and updated engines to their range. They do of course make a wide range of units from small engines for tenders up to hi performace motors for larger leisure craft.
