In fact, the whole conversion can be reversed very quickly” Close examination of the headset reveals one omission: there’s no hydraulic master cylinder. It would be reasonable to assume that the clean lines are the result of a remote cylinder, cable operated and hidden in the tool box. Reasonable, but wrong. Thanks to a clever re-imagination of the throttle tube, the master cylinder is now mounted inside the headset, with the hose travelling directly down the fork stem. Whether it was a creative owner or an enterprising dealer that first started customising their scooter will never be known, but all too soon scooter dealers had latched on to the fact that many riders wanted a machine that was not only their own, but was immediately identifiable as being that of a certain rider. One early exponent of this style was Northampton-based Andre Baldet, who is reputed to have taken inspiration from scooters that he had seen on the Continent. Seratones Power (New-West) I first came across Seratones when they were a fairly average new wave influenced band with a brilliantly soulful singer. Sadly, at that point they weren’t anything special. A change of emphasis and line-up though, and they’re a completely different beast. Singer and guitarist A J Haynes now has space to make the most of her excellent voice, while the band have settled into a sound that draws largely on Seventies Soul. Opening track Fear has an element of Amy Winehouse about it, with its motown-esque feel sucking you into expectations of a lazy, laid-back release. A whole 18 months it took to restore that Lambretta, but finally it was done. It may have seemed like a long time, but back in the 1980s original parts were hard to come by. Not forgetting the only help was by way of an old workshop manual with pages missing. I think I have problems packing for a scooter rally, but having spoken with two American visitors to these shores, I was left thinking that I could try harder! Samantha and Samantha-Jo told how they and friends had stripped a complete Rally 200 engine to bring over to the UK for a mate who had bought it in the States, but was trying to find a more economical way to get it back home. Scooter racing in this day and age is fast and furious, and a very serious business. It needs to be that way in these health and safety conscious times, unfortunately. Years of legislation and risk management mean that circuit-based racing of any type of vehicle is neither cheap nor easy. Over the years scooters have developed into very fast race machines, and whilst small circuits were fine in the early 1980s, these days race scooters are at home at circuits like Cadwell Park and Anglesey. Amongst the smaller traders at the open day was Dusseldorf-based Crazy Monkey Developments. Amongst their entertainingly packaged products was an exceptionally neat anti dive kit for Vespa. Premiering at the open day was their ‘Rhino transporter.’ One of these ‘shoes’ enables a scooter to be securely carried in a van using only one strap and without the risk of cracking a headset with tie downs.
