The first-ever Euro Lambretta had been a fair success and similar events were planned in the future. It was a new rally format, one that took quite a lot of organising especially as those in attendance would have to travel a long distance across Europe to get there. The idea was to hold it every two years to give enough time for the host nation to get their affairs in hand. This meant after the first one in 1989 there would be a gap in between, meaning 1990 would have no event. One train of thought I don’t buy into, philosophically or practically, is that “all two-stroke oils are the same”. They aren’t, period. Our two-stroke forebears may have got away with rough mineral oil but then they also ran the risk of rickets. A simple change in lifestyle all but eliminated the latter and modern two-stroke oil’s formulation does the same for plug fouling and excessive wear. Spending four figures on an engine rebuild and then scrimping on oil makes no sense to me, particularly when informed advice is so easily available. December 1952 heralded the start of production in Madrid, where Vespa scooters among other two-wheeled machines were made under licence. The factory was based in Ciudad Lineal near Madrid. Arguably the most successful model produced there was the Spanish-designed Vespino 50cc moped, which was in production for 30 years. Following its launch in 1977 the Neuva Linea, New Line P-range Vespa would go on to enjoy a huge amount of success over the following decades. Affectionately and somewhat accurately named as the workhorse of Europe, P-range Vespas were produced in both Italy and, from 1978 onwards, also manufactured in Spain at Moto Vespa SA. One of the biggest problems when it comes to building a twin-cylinder Lambretta engine is a strong enough way of connecting the crankshafts. Tino’s answer was to look at how Innocenti had done it all those years ago. On the end of each crank is a four-piece keyway. By connecting the two shafts together this way the strength is far greater. Add in the sleeve that sits in between and you have a connecting system that is almost bulletproof (Stan hopes!).…

From Federation of British Scooter Clubs’ introduction of Street Class in the mid-80s, in road racing events, many off-road events, (in the main promoted by local clubs), followed suit by also introducing Street Class at their scooter sports events. A popular class it proved to be for some years, as it made all forms of scooter sport accessible to ‘all’ with the option of riding your road scooter to a meeting, competing and riding home afterwards. Street Class being introduced in the mid-80s saw interest and entries at most scooter sport events increase considerably and remain popular for a number of years after. One thing lacking with many barn finds is a set of keys and our Li was no exception. Thanks to former Lambretta racer and all round nice chap Jem Booth there’s no need to drill out and replace the original locks. As owner of what’s possibly the largest collection of genuine Lambretta master keys in the world and blanks for virtually every original key number, Jem can supply re-cut keys for all Italian Innocenti and Spanish Servetta ignition switch, steering or toolbox locks. If you, like many owners of Vespa PX, EFL, T5 and PK models, want to convert to a chopper or cutdown with extended forks, you’ll know that finding a speedo cable long enough is hard work! They’ve married scooterists and spent many weekends a year at rallies, mixing with other scooterists and travelling all around the country. It’s taken over a huge part of their life and is reflected in the way they dress, hairstyles, music, maybe even tattoos to make things really clear. Snail’s pace Finally conceding that a new auto was the way to go, my hubbie decided on buying a Royal Alloy GP 200 LC. When it comes to the engine, difficult decisions have to be made regarding how you want to clean it. The problem is, in reality, it needs fully stripping down to do the job correctly but at the same time, you don’t want to disturb the original components. If the engine isn’t running anyway it doesn’t matter – but if it is, it still needs to be stripped regardless. What you must do is proceed with caution to prevent damaging anything. Not that anyone is saying an engine would be taken apart recklessly but usually the old components would be discarded as modern-day replacements are being used. One thing I noticed on strip down was that the wire cable guide was a mess. They’re vulnerable to snapping and at some point this one had been crudely repaired. My rebuild kit included a stainless guide so the weld was ground away. Trying to match the original colour would have been a nightmare so instead I used ‘Rusty Paint’. This is a two-part mixture beloved of rat-rod builders the world over. Once dry and polished the activator oxidises the paint and leaves a fairly convincing rusted effect that nicely complements our original patina. With so much on TV, social media and press about scooter and bike theft gangs, I put the feelers out for someone who’d been in the police to give me a line on the state of play with UK motorcycle and scooter theft. Before meeting up I did some research, and the figures were shocking. Did you know more motorbikes are stolen per year in the UK than are bought new? Most thefts occur in urban areas; London’s the worst (particularly within the M25), then it’s West Yorkshire, West Midlands and Greater Manchester. It takes, on average, just 20 seconds to steal a machine worth £10,000. Only 16% of bikes are ever recovered, and (until quite recently) 80% of thefts were from the bike owner’s home. The rain stopped, the sun came out, all we needed then was for the scooters to come out… and they did, in droves. Scooterists and scooter clubs came from all over the North West, once again surprising us how far they travel to support a worthy cause. This year’s charity was Broughton House, a hospital right on our doorstep just a couple of miles out of the city centre which cares for our veterans just like the famous Chelsea hospital in London.
