I can vividly remember the day, as a lanky 19 year old, I went into WH Smith in Leeds and bought Scootering’s first edition. Never in my wildest dreams did I think that one day I’d be its editor but here I am and I find myself asking, where do we go from here? To help me with that question I’ve a favour to ask. When I compare this edition to the first, it’s clear that the magazine’s come a long way. It’s certainly a far more polished product than at any time in its history. Perhaps a little too polished? Having grown frustrated with Royal Alloy’s spanner and screwdriver approach to securing their side panels, the nice people at SF Stainless have recently introduced their Flooglebinder quick-release clips. The Flooglebinder clips have been developed using the technology found in bicycle quick-release cam levers. They take a few moments to fit and can be installed with the lever facing inside or outside the panel. Once installed the side panels can be removed in seconds. I’ve been racing and watching scooter racing for more than 35 years and during that time I’ve been on track and in the paddock with virtually all the scooter greats. I’ve watched in awe as the likes of Dave Webster, Norrie Kerr, Malc Anderson, Guy Topper and Terry Frankland have passed me. Occasionally, when it was wet, I even hung on to them for a while. But this year I’ve been reflecting a lot as I’m currently writing a book about UK scooter racing, and much as I admire the legends of the sport, through the wonders of modern camera technology I find myself wondering if three of the current racers are possibly among the very best of the best. Winston Churchill, Captain Tom and Lee Rigby are three individuals who, for their own reasons, have all given us time for thought, reflection and respect. The combination of these influences together with an overall respect to the fallen were the inspirations behind Mick Kirk’s scooter. As I touched on briefly in a previous issue, the editor of Scootering, Dan Clare, has now moved on to pastures new. This conjoined issue with Scootering marks the last of his involvement at the helm and has been put together alongside the incoming editor, Stan Bates, who is already a well-known figure in the scooter world. So, at this point, I’d like to take this opportunity to wish Dan well in his new editorial venture which mainly revolves around country life in his home county of Yorkshire and the surrounding areas. For years the Lui was a fairly shy machine; one that only certain folk had an eye for as it wasn’t fashionablle enough, but just tolerated. How things havve changed! Everyone seems to want one and d the number of items you can now get for tthe Lui range is just unbelievable; from making g the machines more usable for everyday usse to being absolutely stark-raving-mad little pocket rockets. Much of this present model resurgence can be attributed to the big players within the classic scooter scene producing some really nutty stuff and adding to the Luna-cy (see what I did there?). When riding jeggings were first introduced, I was keen to get a pair and spent many frustrating visits to various shops struggling to find some that fitted well and I could pull on without resorting to the ‘wriggle from side to side, jump up and down’ performance. So it’s fair to say that I was more than pleasantly surprised when I put RST’s x Kevlar jeggings on for the first time. The original Mod era could have come to an end with the Brighton and Clacton riots, but many of those involved continued with their musical exploration. In a press release Apple has stated that exposure to vibrations, like those generated by ‘high-powered motorcycle engines’, could damage iPhone cameras. With most classic scooters lacking a dedicated power socket, many riders have found that their smartphone makes an adequate sat nav substitute. However users of iPhones fitted with optical image stabilisation (OIS) as part of the camera may wish to quickly review the way their phones are mounted. Apple states that: “The OIS and closed-loop AF systems in iPhone are designed for durability. Racer needs a ruler Hi Scootering, I have something to add to the 90 Racer debate. First of all, there are two different 90 Racers. Both feature the long wheelbase, as do the 50 Sprinter and the 50 SR (there is no 50 Racer). It is very easy to spot the wheelbase difference. The distance between the hole for the main stand and the meeting of the back part and the front part of the frame is around 115mm compared to 90mm on the short wheelbase frames like 90SS etc. Also both 90 Racers have the small legshield of the Primavera not the wider one of the Nuova. Acid Jazz label announces World Got Soul imprint Without question, one of the hotte est names in contemporary Mod/new northern ssoul releases is that of Argentinian multi-instrumentalist musician, composer and producerr Kevin Fingier. He set up The Kevin Fingier Collective as the house band for aa project that produces Mod, soul, R‘n’B and Latin-infused boogaloo recordings. Using 50-year-old recording techniques, his productions certainly have an aura of the 1960s about them. Acid Jazz set up a subsidiary label, Fingier Records, as a vehicle for Kevin Fingier’s output. An increasingly popular option at many rallies is the chance to Carry on Glamping. The original National Scooter Day (NSD) took place on September 12, 1981, being the brainchild of Tommy Marr, a well-known Worcester scooterist. This was a forerunner of the National Rallies we all know and love, being held at the Three Counties Showground, Malvern. This venue, of course, was visited during the NSD2 rideout on Saturday, September 18, 2021, to pay homage to the original rally and to celebrate the 40th anniversary. It was led by Norman Lambert and Gary Smart who both attended the 1981 rally. It was back in 1980, at the age of 17, that Mark Jepson, the owner of a Vespa Rally 200, was seeking inspiration as he began to customise his machine. His father was a keen custom car builder and together they visited that year’s custom show at the NEC in Birmingham. It’s certainly true of Kelso and anyone who’s never experienced a South West Scooter Clubs rally is missing a treat. In common with all rally organisers, SWSC has had a difficult 18 months. The scooter you see here has an interesting background – but then again, so does its current owner, Phil Case. And as Phil is, shall we say, the slightly elder of the pair, let’s start with a bit of background on him. The story begins in 1979 when Phil was a 14-year-old Punk who became heavily into The Jam, so was aware of Mods through a certain Mr Weller.
