Over the past few years there has been a gradual but steady trend of art media moving into the scrapbooking world. We still love our traditional scrapbook supplies such as patterned papers, ready-made alphabets and embellishment, however there is a growing movement towards using these products in different ways, creating our own customised looks. Aside from fruit and vegetables, all you need is an oven, a baking tray, baking paper, a baking rack and a mortar and pestle (or coffee grinder); items you most likely already have in your kitchen. Common sense tells us that the thinner the produce we are dehydrating, the quicker it will dehydrate. Accordingly, for the most part, you will need to cut your fruit and vegetables into very fine slices. I used a mandolin (and my husband!) when doing mine. To date I have experimented with sweet potato, English spinach (the leaves), carrots, lemons (the zest), red onions, tomatoes, raspberries (fresh), red capsicum, blueberries (defrosted), green peas (defrosted), pumpkin and beetroot (fresh not tinned). There are many ways to achieve this look on your page, from buying a pre-cut 12in x 12in page which many manufacturers offer, to creating your own. The great thing about making it yourself though is that you get the perfect background to match your photo or theme, not to mention it is fun and satisfying too.
