The people of Great Dunmow, Essex, are used to seeing yarn bomber Kathleen Shannon’s wonderful work popping up on their post boxes, but it was her amazing Olympic gold medallist dolls that made the headlines, locally and nationally. Her knitted doll versions of winning local athletes Beth Shriever (BMX), Ben Maher (show jumping) and Max Whitlock (gymnastics) have become somewhat of an attraction. We spoke to Kathleen to find out more about what inspires her. Originally from Co. I trained as a nurse in the late 1960s/early 1970s and our uniforms took a bit of getting used to. As you went through the ranks, your dress and belt changed colour and when you qualified, you were allowed to wear a special buckle and cuffs. QUESTION OF THE MONTH MOTH-BUSTERS Q I picked up a huge stash of yarn and old knits from a vintage fair, and most of it is wool. I am a bit concerned that it might have moths in it. The Archie Foundation exists to make the difference in healthcare and bereavement for local babies, children and families across north Scotland. What’s your latest fundraising news? We recently reached out to knitters to support our appeal for Worry Monsters – knitted monsters with a zip-up pouch mouth, which children are encouraged to ‘feed’ their worries to. Parents, carers or medical staff working with these children can secretly review what is worrying the child and take action to alleviate whatever is causing the child concern and upset. Some years ago I had a conversation with a friend, and told her I was starting my Master’s degree. I can still remember grinning as she rolled her eyes at me – I told her that she was wrong and I would always be a student. There’s always something new to learn, we can have interests in many different directions (my Master’s degree is in Classical Studies because I love Roman history), and I believe it all adds to the richness of our lives. Fortunately, we had permission to shoot at Lyngby Youth Hostel, an ideal location in historical Raadvad, close to Dyrehaven, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
