“Love at first sight” is an overused expression until you feel it. Interior designer Jamie Merida first saw the Chesapeake Bay house that he and his husband, Vincent Bochin, call home in a real estate advertisement back in 2005. “The minute I turned off the main road and drove up the spectacular tree-lined driveway, I decided: I’m going to buy it; I don’t care if there’s a house at the end of the road!” Merida recalls. “I saw it in the spring, with big, showy dogwoods and cherry blossoms and huge specimen rhododendrons bursting in flower. Southern Home (SH): We often begin by asking about the path to becoming a designer—yours seems almost predestined [Alexa started working with her father, legendary designer Mark Hampton, when she was 13], and you answered pretty definitively in the opening pages of your new book, Alexa Hampton: Design, Style, and Influence (Clarkson Potter, 2023). Given you’ve tackled this question countless times, we’ll give it a twist: If you hadn’t become a designer, what would you have been? Alexa Hampton (AH): I think about that a lot. Inlay, the art of embellishing an object by setting pieces of wood, metal, or even mother-of-pearl into the surface, has been a prized form of decoration since ancient times. It was the Egyptians who perfected the technique, creating inlaid woodwork of such beauty that the craft was later adopted throughout the Middle East and Asia, where it proved a major influence on the decorative arts. Inlay became a standard feature of Islamic architecture, with intricately inlaid wood and ivory or bone panels and doors often appearing in mosques. The technique was also notably embraced in India, where Western furniture forms, such as chests of drawers, were elaborately inlaid with bits of exotic materials, including ivory, ebony, or mother-of-pearl and became highly sought after in Europe. It’s hard to imagine leaving an area you love. That’s why this Tennessee couple decided not to venture far when looking for a larger home for their family of five. “We lived in a house around the corner that we loved but had outgrown,” one of the owners explains. Being an older, established area, lots were hard to come by, so when the opportunity to purchase one just down the street presented itself, they were sold, and the process began. When asked about the inspiration behind the new design of her clients’ historic Lake Highlands, Texas, home, Ashleigh Graber fondly recalls a conversation she had with them upon their first meeting. “It all began with a very sweet sentiment,” says the Dallas-based interior designer. “Even though their children are quite young, my clients were already thinking about the graduation parties, weddings, and other milestone events they hope to celebrate there over the years. Pocket doors were first introduced in the US in the 1850s during the Victorian era, gaining momentum in the 1880s. In the early days, the designs were less than ideal, though much improved in the last and current centuries due to advances in technology and installation. Initially, pocket doors, which are doors that slide into walls and disappear, were often used between parlors and dining rooms, providing openness when needed for flow but also separating spaces for more intimate gatherings. The utility of pocket doors became even more apparent during the postwar building era of the 1950s when houses were smaller and also in recent years to create a sense of division between rooms in open floor plans. There’s an air of sophistication in the rich tones of deep purple, especially in aubergine, the hue that was the impetus for the interiors of this new custom home in Bethesda, Maryland, designed by interior and textile designer Marika Meyer of Marika Meyer Studio. The classic Southern grandeur of this Mobile, Alabama, property, along with its revered listing on the National Register of Historic Places, led the charge for a series of carefully crafted renovations that have taken place over time. Built in 1913 in the city’s historic residential neighborhood known as Ashland Place, this magnificent home’s architectural allure is perhaps one of its greatest assets and the lifeline to its richly storied past.
