One of the things I just love about textile art and embroidery is the connection between traditional techniques and modern styles. Take, for instance, Loëtitia Gibier’s stunning cover project – based on traditional folk-art style, Loëtitia’s project is nevertheless a breath of fresh air. With a modern colour scheme and clever use of stumpwork techniques, this project won’t fail to provide a new challenge to even the most experienced of stitchers! It’s also simply beautiful to behold. If you are looking for a challenge, this folk-style butterfly piece is for you! Not only are a variety of stitches used, but there are many stumpwork elements, from the detached wings to the flower petals. Applying a Bead Secure the bead with a single stitch. Back Stitch Bring thread through on the stitch line and take a small backward stitch through the fabric. Bring the needle through again a little in front of the first stitch, take another stitch, inserting the needle at the point where it first came through. Repeat. • All threads are used as one strand or a single length unless indicated otherwise. It is a great way to use your own photographs creatively, without sacrificing the original.• It can be bought online from various retailers and is usually available in a washable or non-wash variety. I have loved creating this little piece especially for Stitch! I am best known for my ‘Making It Real’ piece, which is bark, lichen and fungus, but when I heard the article would feature in a summer issue, I couldn’t wait to do a ‘Making It Real’ rockpool. The journey started on my doorstep as we lived a few seconds from the beach; on the low tide, I photographed the pools and collected sea shells and some quite smelly seaweed. My work is all about the minutia of colour and detail, so I start with drawings and then select the perfect fabrics and how to stitch in the detail; then, I select the colours and embark on the painting. This versatile project, inspired by the humble dandelion, is a great stash-buster. I will not specify a particular number or brand of stranded cotton thread so that you can use what you have already. I would simply advise opting, when choosing your green shades, to go for those with yellow tones rather than blue. There’s something really pleasing about creating something that will fit inside of a found object. As I made the landscape, I kept popping it into the tin to see how it looked and would fit; each time, it just really made me smile.
