In the age of legends, the part of Greece known as Attica was inhabited by many warlike tribes. Even their ruler, King Actaeus, wasn’t able to stop them from fighting with each other!
One day, a hero named Cecrops came to Attica from the far north. People thought he was most peculiar, for he had a snake’s tail instead of legs! But King Actaeus did not judge people by appearances. He greeted this newcomer to his land, and discovered that the snake-tailed hero was wise and well-mannered.
Cecrops was so impressed by this warm welcome that he decided to stay. When Attica was invaded by raiders from the south, Cecrops helped to fight them, and proved to be a mighty warrior as well!
