THE Queensland Hot Rod Show is one of the longest-running indoor shows in the country, and notched up its 48th event in early July. The event went into hiatus last year – after shows at the Brisbane Convention Centre in 2015-2017 – but was back this year at its traditional home of the RNA Showgrounds. The show saw some killer cars debut, including Jason Behan’s MINTVAL VG Valiant coupe, which we featured in bare metal back in the June 2016 issue of SM. FAST cars are in Kris Edwards’s blood. Hailing from the NSW Central Coast town of Wyong, he is the third generation in a line-up of street and track racers. Kris’s grandfather Arthur was a street racer of the bike kind through the late 1940s, before turning his hand to speedway during the golden era of the 1950s and 60s, while his late father Colin was a regular racer at the infamous Brickies street drags at Homebush in the mid-to-late 70s. SPEED cameras are annoying enough as it is, but imagine if those cameras were not only booking us for creeping over the limit, but for our rides being too loud? Well in the UK that might be a real possibility, with trials beginning for speed cameras that can detect cars that are too loud and automatically book offending motorists. DAVID Frake, Leo Khouri and Mark Lamb are quick to reassure us that they aren’t madmen. Although, as we stand between two irreplaceable, iconic Aussie muscle cars covered in dirt and bug guts, it would be easy to query that. BY MY reckoning, this incredible ’63 Lincoln Continental is the ninth car of Mark Sullivan’s that we’ve featured since 2005: “Not bad going for an individual,” says Mark, who then admits: “I’ve slowed down a bit actually.” Yep, it’s been about 18 months since we last featured one of his cars, but when you look at his latest creation – and the sheer size of it – that’s still pretty good going. If you’re familiar with Mark’s previous cars, which are essentially muscle cars, you’ll notice this Linc is quite the departure, but still utilises the key styling cues of his other builds: big wheels, low stance, updated interior and killer bodywork and paint. THERE seems to be two main ways that modifiers put strength into vehicles. There’s the ‘railway iron’ method, where the design relies on heavy structural members that resist the applied stress from bigger engines in a simple fashion to get a strong structure. Traditional and modern hot rod chassis and some street machine subframes rely on this approach, but it’s often unnecessarily heavy and can look a little crude. Boxing a chassis with 3/8-inch plate and using I-beam X-members come to mind as examples of this kind of overkill. During the 50s and 60s, factory designers found it convenient to keep convertibles rigid by simply adding massive I-beams to their closed car frames to replace the loss of the roof structure. USUALLY when Queensland’s Phil Halpin and his two sons hit the drag strip in anger they’re straddling motorbikes, but when Drag Challenge Weekend came to town a few months ago, the boys opted to trade in their crotch-rockets for a weekend in Phil’s WB panel van. When Phil got his hands on his WB pano many moons ago, it was just a humble farm rig with a typically asthmatic straight-six and 450,000km of hard yakka under its collar. Since then, Phil has given the exterior a renovation to get rid of all the dents and battle scars, but the biggest change by far was the driveline. AN EXAMPLE of one of Holden’s most iconic modern muscle cars – the CV8 Monaro – is about to undergo a comprehensive restoration and rethink at the hands of its original creators. WHILE there were plenty of awesome cars designed in the 1970s, Holden’s HQ Monaro coupe has to be one of the top shapes to come out of the era of disco, fondue and bellbottoms. WHEN our mates at Unique Cars reasoned they’d attended enough car events that it was high time they hosted one of their own, we thought we’d better tag along and suss it out. They’d seen how much fun we’d been having running events like Street Machine Drag Challenge, and for their own foray into the event space they decided that while the whole Cars ’n’ Coffee formula was a winner, it could be improved upon by incorporating a more dynamic element. ESCORT SERVICE I WAS knocked out to read about the Harrop supercharger set-up on a 355 Holden V8 using a VR block (Mill Of The Month, SM, Apr ’19). However, I was more surprised to read about Shannon Heraud’s lime-green Ford Escort a while back with a blown 253 (SM, Aug ’18). The article stated that the 253 motor was making nearly 600hp with 12psi of boost at around 7000-7500 rpm. I’m wondering how much torque that 253 is making and what the compression ratio is. WHAT blows me away about Anthony Villani’s XP coupe is that it was built 23 years ago. Yep, that impeccable blue paint is over two decades old, yet it bears hardly a blemish. “The paint, interior and wheels are exactly as I built the XP in the late 90s,” Anthony says. “It’s done 13,000 miles since, and it still runs the same tyres and brake pads.” Let’s take a trip back to 1996, when a mid-20s Anthony first laid eyes on his prize. “I knew a local Shepparton guy who had an XP two-door with another shell sitting in his backyard,” he says. “So I had a look at it, and then did the deal for $2000.” Anthony dragged home a bare body, with no door mechs or even side…
